Wondering if anyone could take a look at their ECU for me. I thought I uninstalled all the remnants of the APR X-1, but I am still having issues tuning and I think it's related to the past piggyback install. Basically, my wideband and HP tuners software sees the AFR as one thing, but the commanded AFR is whack and the STFT are -20% no matter what I do. I can pull so much fuel that the truck barely starts or runs (the wideband and software confirm the lean tune) but the commanded lambda is like .42 and the fuel trims are maxed out at -20. I found that the wire harness to the ECU has been modified, and found something that looks suspicious, what do you think?

edit: damn. looked at my 4Runner and the same e-taped wire was there. Doesn't look factory, but I guess it is.

I think that taped wire is a taped shield wire. Hard to tell from the photo.

    Might be your sensors perhaps?

Well, I got a little frustrated and replaced the MAF and all four 02 sensors. I have pulled out some serious hair at this point.

With an OEM or at least Denso MAF, correct?

It was a generic off Amazon :(. No change though. I do have an 08 4Runner I can pull the denso off to check.

Do that. I just went through this with 2 people recently. Faulty generic sensors. Put a Denso in, and boom. Magic. ;)

No luck :(. I am so stumped as to why the desired lambda is .42, doesn't make any sense with the short term trim pulling fuel.

Yeah, he's been helping as much as he can. His next task for me is putting in the stock injectors, which I'm going to do tonight.

What about the exhaust sensors? Were those as well generic?

Can you see their performance on the HPTuner program?

Nah, those were OEM, knew I couldn't cheap out on them. I'm not sure if I can graph them or not, Justin will know though.

You can view the voltage for each independent sensor in the scanner, yes. You'll have to add those channels though to the current channels definition file. Since the factory WRAF's and the AEM Wideband "jive", I'm inclined to take the reported mixture as accurate. The issue(s) are are:

    1) His injectors are "unknown". We know what they're supposed to be, but using the data proofed by others using the injectors these should be leaves us with fueling that is way off target.

    2) As I've mentioned before, getting these trucks to run right is actually very simple; Ensure the airflow and fuel models are accurate and it'll do what you tell it. Since our fuel model is suspect, we needed to ensure the airflow model was accurate, and given the specs of the intercooler piping/MAF housing, we should be in the ball-park for the MAF calibration data. Meaning, the injector data should work if these are the injectors they are supposed to be. IIRC, we confirmed the part numbers (perhaps I'm mistaken) but since we were still dealing with fueling errors after replacing the O2's with new units meant it was likely a suspect MAF.

    3) However, given the fact that we've replaced everything that could affect the airflow/fuel models, the only external suspect part at this point is back to the injectors. Something is causing a gross rich condition for this motor.

In my experience, the ECU will adjust it's target lambda value in response to fuel trim data if things are far enough off. I wouldn't focus on that, as that's just a byproduct of the airflow & fuel modeling errors. Once whatever issue that is present is resolved, you'll find the ECU will bring no longer compensate in this manner.

If the thing won't run right with stock injectors, there are mechanical/electrical issues that need to be isolated and resolved.

You guys really are the best, I hope you know how much I appreciate your time and expertise. I am just about to pull the upper intake manifold off and will have the injectors swapped out shortly. I am somewhat embarrassed to say that I got generic injectors for this test, I hope that doesn't screw me.

Stock injectors and stock file looks really promising, emailed the read over to you @JustDSM.

So I take it that you narrowed it down and proved it to be the large injectors being at fault?

Sure seems like it. Makes me wonder if I got knockoff injectors or they are damaged or what. What kind of headroom do I have with the stock injectors? Which injectors are you running?
