Hello all, I have a 2001 Taco, 2.7 107,500 miles, extra cab SR5. The past 3 or so years I've had to put about $4000 into getting things fixed..full brake job, struts, shocks, ball joints, some other stuff I've forgotten, nothing engine wise except for emissions sensor and valve. Now it's the tie rods, inner and outer. Looking at $400-500 to fix them. I work at a dealership where I can get a great deal on another truck, brand new. I really like my truck, I'm the original owner. Realistically it's getting old and more stuff is gonna happen. I'm not a mechanic by any means, simple things but can't really do a lot. I've heard of these trucks lasting forever but how much of that is people doing most or at least some of their own work? No leaks, running fine, body in good shape..giving me $5500 for trade in. Thoughts on this?

    Thanks!
    Sherry

Add up monthly payment & insurance increase and depreciation (use IRS guidelines to calculate). Keep your financing to a realistic 3 years. Bet you'll be stunned at what that all adds up to.

How much does that provide you in repair funds, per year, for what sounds like a solid serviceable truck? 107k is minuscule, but all vehicles have wear items, which are what you've called out. Even a new one will need those things eventually.

Does your dealer give you a significant break on parts and labor? If not, find a good independent shop to do your routine maintenance and repairs (all you've mentioned so far) and save another pile of money.

The only 'magic' in dealership work is when something requires a unique tool/computer/or specialty training to handle. A new truck is going to have much more of that than your '01.

    I would personally keep it.
    2 or 4 wheel?
Either way you could sell for much more especially with milage. Probably even double what they offered you. Unless you like having a new truck payment :angrygirl:
1 owner ,lower mileage tacomas are hard to come by.
I'm sure most on here would give you what they offered you in a heart beat.
    Keep it!! :bananadance:
    Just my 2cents.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Fix your truck and drive it until it tells you it’s dead

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
Seriously... If you like the truck, keep the truck. I have 259,000 miles on my truck.

I have done nothing to my truck aside from an 02 sensor at 150,000, Spark plugs at 245,000, a new battery, tires, and oil changes.

My truck needs a few things now... tie rod ends, shocks ball joints etc but I don't think you need to worry about it "falling apart" any time soon. My motor runs strong, A/C blows cold... only thing I can think of that stopped working is the cassette deck under the cd player... and I think that's just dirty from lack of use.

But on a side note... if you just have to get rid of it. Wait till May-June. My kid is in Iraq. When he gets home, he'll have a bit of money from deployment and will be looking for a first truck. He'll be looking for a first gen Taco... He's stationed at Polk. (halfway kidding... keep the truck)

100,000 miles in 17 years is really good! All those items would have to be done on any vehicle at that age. You won't need to spend $4000 for another 17 years because nothing else will brake on you truck. If you love it keep it.

Good deal. I bought my truck with 289K on it and have no regrets.

A $6000 paid for truck is worth more than a $25-30K truck with a lien. ;)

I looked at getting a new truck last year and did some math. 1500$ in repairs vs 700$ a month for 5 years for a 2017 Fx4. My common sense got a hold of me real fast. I have 235k and I'm going for 400k!

Looked down to see 137,700, today. Have them check the charging system and shampoo the interior while it’s there
