PS. Filling an automatic transmission on a 2nd gen requires the fluid being at the proper temperature. This is a somewhat involved process. As an emergency measure; if you know how much “Transmission” fluid you drained can fill it back up with an equal amount. This should be considered a bandage until you can get the truck to shop or you can get the transmission up to proper temperature and thus level.

Also Toyota WS Transmission fluid is expensive. I and a lot of people use Valvoline MaxLife. Use at your own risk, YMMV. It runs about $18 per gallon at Walmart.

Not to rub salt in the wound but I’m curious, do you remember what you did when you changed the oil a while back? I’m guessing you didn’t drain the transmission that time.

Haha yeah I know I did it right last time, as I changed it right before I drove across the country. As soon as I saw the picture posted of where the oil pan was I realized you all were right. I guess I was just distracted this time around. Obviously I should have been *more* positive about saying that haha

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Just make sure you use the right fluid on the refill.

    Yeah.
The transmission being slightly overfilled or slightly underfilled, while not ideal, is not a big deal. Usually you'll get about 3.5 quarts out of the pan on a drain. However, if you drove it and drained again, not sure how much would come out the second time around (I'm not clear if you tried a second drain or not).

Get the right fluid, Valvoline MaxLife or Castrol makes one as well, just make sure it is the right kind.

If you only did the one drain, start with 3.5 quarts and get it up to temp. If you did a second drain, you'll have to guess how much came out, but probably another 2-3 quarts or so. You likely did not drain more than about 7 quarts, so having 8 quarts, or 2 gallons on hand would be prudent.

Using an IR thermometer should get you close enough if you can't get it into temp mode (lots of folks have difficulty, I have a Scangauge that I use but probably more expensive than an IR thermometer, and you have to program it to read the right sensor). Just add 2 or 3 degrees to the IR reading -- someone on here did a test, the difference between the sensor reading and the IR reading was only about 2 degrees. Do the trickle procedure and be happy that you now have some fresh tranny fluid in there!
