I have a 2001 Tacoma 2.7 3rz. I recently replaced the head on it and I'm having trouble getting it started. I made certain the dots on the cams line up, made certain the dots on the gears line up with the bright links on the timing chain. However when I turn the motor over it sounds like the compression from the cylinders is channeling through the tubes around the ignition coils? I'm hearing about balance shaft and weights being at the bottom. I did have to replace the gear /sprocket for the crank sensor and removed the small gear to the right to gain chain length to install it but I marked the gear and the link and put it back together so in my mind, nothing was really disturbed. Any thoughts?

You probably just need to check the timing.

I've been thinkin about this since I first read this post. This is old school, but may very well apply to this. In the olden days, when heads were replaced, you had to have the #1 piston flush with the block. Then you aligned the marks on the chain. Having never worked on this engine, I could be way off base, but it's been runnin thru my mind.

Yeah I'm old school too and I'm pretty sure this only works one way. But I've tried turning 180 degrees and still same thing. I just don't know. I have too much pride to take it to a shop and find something stupid lol. However, enough is enough
