want to change out the bulbs only on my 2015 to some brighter leds. Amazed at the choices out there. should I be looking at projector type bulbs, how many lumens can I get, do I need Canbus bulbs? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I know I could add some lights to the rear, but not interested in doing that, just changing the bulbs. Thanks in advance

12 volt halogen landscaping bulbs from hardware store. 35 watt.

Think I paid $6 for the pair a few years ago.

The reverse bulbs I have seen, didn't make that much a difference. I ended up adding 18w aux lights. Love em!!

+1. For real output, might want to consider the aux route. I am mounting two Baja Designs to my bed bar after seeing the difference offroading with a buddy last month. No comparison.

For a fast and cheap option, the halogen I mentioned are a noticeable improvement.

For $20 and some effort though, you can get some led work lights or flood light to mount in the bumper. More light but have to figure out mounting and splice some wiring.

    This^^^

There's a thread on here about changing out the bulbs for brighter ones. I happened to use 50W on mine and so far so good - it's been a year now. GY6.35 bulb is the size. Buy based on the lowest wattage draw with the highest lumens. 50W may be a bit too hot and melt the connector if left on too long, hence the 35W that many are using. The best would be an LED version that has the lumens output of a 50W (or higher) bulb but yet a low current draw...

The 886 mod is it. The thread started out using and modifying a 886 bulb but then someone found that the GY6.35 fits without having to modify it.

ok the GY6.35 bulb puts out about 600 lumens and pulls about 3 amps.

The JDM ASTAR 921 LED puts out over 800 lumens and pulls about .5 amps. Why go with a Halogen lamp when you can get more light from an LED with less power draw? There are other JDM LEDs that put out over 1000 lumens.

My question was what is the best LED with the most light? I understand I can install other light fixtures that will put out insane amounts of illumination, but what I would like to know is what LED replacement bulb ( for low power draw and the most light output) provides the best illumination as a replacement bulb. I don't want to install new fixtures, but want to get as much light output from my existing backup light as I can with the least power draw so I don't overheat things and burn up plugs and wires. Halogen bulbs don't seem to be the answer. Anyone got any info?

I swapped out the oem bulbs with leds from a brand I carry called diode dynamics. They're pricey but worth every penny - they're bright as hell! Let me know if you want a set.

I did the GY6.35 bulbs and one toasted on the second day. They were very bright but I was worried about the heat and fitment (not snug) to begin with. I replaced them with Philips 921 LEDs, though not as bright, I have peace of mind knowing my harness wont melt.

Weathertech floor liners moded to hold OEM floor mats, weathertech vent visors, Toyota bed mat, LEER 100XL cap, hood gasket mod to stop whistling.
Under bumper 15 watt CREE lights and be done with it. Tap into the trailer harness reverse wire, no relay required. I can light up the house across the street while backing out of the driveway.

    Coming soon, tailgater override switch.

This. But definitely do the 35W instead of the 50W as many have done. Plenty bright without the risk of melting things down. Im not aware of any high output good LED replacements using stock fixtures. The light dispersion and color pretty much sucks. It's not intuitive but even though they appear to be very bright they produce less light usable to the human eye where it is needed.

These are the ones I run -
XP50: Each of the four sides of this bulb contains two 5W-rated chips, and the top is fitted with two more under a projector lens. Housed in an aluminum casing with textured finish for maximum heatsinking properties.

They retail at about 90$ which I know is pricey for LED bulbs but they have been amazing for me, I run their full LED lineup, along with their HID's and retrofit parts in a few of my other cars. Their customer service is 100% and I have never had issues with getting things warrantied when they fail.

I'll try to get some photos up of how bright they are tonight.

It's not for everyone I guess.
I'll try to grab some of it lighting up my driveway in a second. These were from Nov 16th 2015 when I installed them.

Just taken in my backyard. My evo is under the car cover for size reference. It's bright enough that I can actually see out of the 3 layers of tinted windows from the cab, and Leer cap.
