I've been stuck in the barracks on Fort Knox the last 5 weeks at the Army's recruiting college and I need to get the fuck out. We're getting a break from 23-26 Nov for Thanksgiving. I'd like to do some light wheeling and camping that weekend.
When I was stationed here in 2009 we used to go to a place in Southern Indiana to wheel but I can't remember what it was called, and can't seem to find it on Google maps.
Can any local guys reccommend nearby off-road parks for me?

And by light I mean the kind of wheeling that would destroy a stock truck

If you wanna "meet up" and go do something wheeling or camping related we could meet up in lexington Kentucky and convoy out to red river gorge.

Not a lot of legal wheeling left in the area outside of "parks"

Ex Army too. I know your frustration! I spent 36 months @ Ft Sill. Not a lot going on there in the late '70's.

If it was a "legal park in Southern Indiana", it was most likely Interlake SRA. That over near Evansville.

A little closer, "Highwater Road" just outside New Albany....power line right-of-ways in the hills just north of the Ohio River. Not "legal" but not "illegal" either. Us locals have been running these trails for nearly 50 years. Sort of a secret to those of us from the area.

I'm about an hour east of Knox, in Kentucky now. (Close to Knob Creek Gun Range) Native Hoosier though, and still familiar with Southern Indiana.

You have Land Between the Lakes about 3 hours west, in Ky. Many miles of trails at varying degrees of difficulty. Great camping.

There is also some back country camping and dirt road "overlanding" in Hoosier National Forest" just south of the Bloomington area. More about camping than the roads getting there though...

Looking to get a small run to Red River Gorge just after T-giving. Watch Central Ky thread. That's about 2-1/2 hours east of your 20.

Also see you're from Oregon. I used to go to Trask Mountain every year (80's and 90's) for an AMA National Reliability Trials event. (Isde qulifier) (dirt bikes) Loved the area!

Interlake sounds familiar, that was probably the place. Thanks for all the info.

I love Oregon. Right now I’m stationed at Bragg in NC. I volunteered for recruiting duty to finish out my last three years until I retire. I’m being sent to N.California (Eureka) so not to far from home. There should be lots of outdoor opportunities there for us. Looking forward to it

Restored/re-claimed surface mine (coal) ground. Peabody Coal owned it, sorta left it abandon during one of it's many bankruptcy restructurings. The state of Indiana took it over for delinquent taxes, wrestled with how to keep off roaders (mainly ATV's) off the property for years. Finally figured "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" and turned it into Interlake State Recreation Area.

For years, it was part of the site for the Black Coal National Enduro. After land access became an issue, it was switched to a closed course National Hare Scrambles event. Recent years has seen the enduro return. I've been all over that place on dirt bikes....Need to get there and take a look at it from the drivers perspective in a Tacoma!

Yeah I've been going to the gorge most of my life to do climbing, camping, hiking and occasionally when I'm luck some super fast technical road driving. I love that area IMG_5423.jpg
