Need to be educated on wheel size and tire size

I have a 05 Tacoma double cab that I bought used several years ago. The truck came with oversized rims which I've been using 275 55 R18 tires on. The tires have always been a slight hassle getting, because of their unusual size. (Usually takes 3 days or so). Now my dealer cannot get them at all (at least for now). I tried 275 65 R18's, but they were too big.

The truck is NOT lifted and is at factory height.

My issue is that I travel a fair amount. I don't need to be stranded for several days somewhere because I cannot get a quick (common tire size) replacement should I have a tire issue.

I'm considering replacing the wheels and getting something that is sporty and yet accept a more common tire size, but I don't know what that should be!

What would be a good rim size to get (for example, 17 x 8, 18 x 8), that would satisfy my needs?

    Thanks all!

Why not get some stock tires and rims off craigslist or such? Wouldn't be surprised to see cheap ones pop up. Then just resell the 18's. You'll probably end up ahead

    I would do a 265 75 16 tire or a 265 70 17 tire. They are super common and they still look good. for Rim any 16x7, 16x8, 17x7 17x8 whatever really

I would consider it, but want something a bit sportier than factory rims.

Look for 17" wheels. More tire sizes available. 17x8 works

OP you are probably a good candidate for some take-off 4Runner 17" wheels. Just check craigslist once a week and you're bound to find someone selling their new set for a good price.

That's what I'd do too. Those sizes are virtually the same overall dimensions other than the hole in the middle. They are slightly taller than stock but will fit with no modifications to the truck and look good on a Pre-Runner. You could also go to 265/70/16 or 265/65/17 and get back to stock size.

Thanks all! This gives me a starting point! Only a couple of more pieces of information left.

What size rims for a 265/65/17? (WIDTH is what I'm looking for here) 17x8 for example?

Are the lug holes all "standard"? If I order a 6 lug wheel, (I know enough to look for a wheel for 05 Tacoma, but "they" pretty much put everything on the website), am I going to get one with the correct spacing for my Taco?

Also, does the year Tacoma matter? If I were to go with "used" stock wheels, what year(s) would fit my truck?

    Thanks again!

If the only size you are running is 265/65/17 then an 8" wide wheel should be enough. In your case rim width mostly comes into play when you are going bigger/wider (or smaller/skinnier but that is less common).

You need a 6 lug wheel with matching lug pattern of 6 x 5.5" (or 6x139.7 for metric fans). More importantly you need the proper center bore since our wheels are hub-centric and not lug-centric.

There's a whole lot of information in the wheels & tires subforum which you can read at the link below. This has all been done before.

    Stock, 4WD, Access Cab, White,
Stock 17" wheels (on the Sport editions) have the following dimensions.

    Rim 17" x 7.5"
    Bolt circle 6-139.7 mm
    Offset +30 mm
Sorry, I forget the bore size. I'm sure someone on TW has the size.
Stock tire is 265/65-17 Not sure if this tire will fit an 8" wide wheel.

Don't worry about the "year" for the wheels. Match the dimensions. You have some flex in the offset number.

The placard on the driver's door jamb will have the stock tire size.

One more question, I would like to stick with the original tire size (265/65-17) will that tire work on a 8 or 8.5 inch wide rim?

    Thanks!

Check out tiresize.com. they will list all the tires you can think of and the wheel specs (width too) that are appropriate to use for a given tire size.
They also have a ton of useful tire related tools/calculators.
