    grrr...
do make a "party boat" i seen this one in rocky point (cloest beach in AZ but its in mexico) crazy shit happens on there. AND!!! you can get wasted...

i used to love my old job, then i started to hate it, and then for a whole year grew to hate it, i wasnt happy. i always wanted to play poker for a living, but my family (ESPEICALLY my folks) tried to talk me out of it. i always had a "natural" feeling for finite math, and can guess pretty close to the actual math of anything with chance of chance and even can throw in some un-seen variables. been programing "punters" (old school AOL'ers know what that is) since i was like 12-13 yrs old. wanted to be a programmer/computer science major, but found out that type of job isnt what i wanted (wanted to program games) not manage databases (gay). but now i just love to do the "head math" and apply it to a hand of casino war, or a hand of blackjack, or a person playing poker. but i will say you got to AT LEAST try to reach for you dreams, and go for what makes you happy. cuz if you dont, theres ALWAYS gonna be that "what if"... even if i go broke, and fail on what makes me happy, i least i woke up EVERYDAY for a few months, and know that the sky is the limit, and the sky is within arms reach. to be able to wake up and go in your tacoma and drive somewhere, with hardly any reason. i dunno. im drunk, so im just saying/expressing... how i feel...

Sailing for a living. That'd be a dream come true for me. I've toyed with the idea of getting my captain's licence and doing charters (an excuse for a bigger boat) and deliveries.

No one will hire you with no experience even for minimum wage, there are too many teenagers who sail to make it a realistic option. The best way to get into sailing for a living would be to find a non profit marine organization. Start as a volunteer and actually get some experience in, on and under (that bottom doesn't stay clean without help) the boats. Learning that language you claim I keep making up would also be important but comes pretty naturally when you're around boats that actually need working crews.

Once you know the ropes you might be able to find something but without real experience expect long hours, little pay and the dirtiest/hardest jobs until you get some seniority on classic ships. Things might be a bit easier on private yachts IF you could find one in need of crew. They usually hire foreign eye candy that just happens to have spent years growing up sailing. The crew is at the beck and call of the owner 24 hours a day in exchange for a bunk, meals when under way and a starting salary of less than 10K. You won't get rich but might see some exotic destinations and there could be a hot young girl crewing with you.... or not.

Then I wholeheartedly admire the post, nd. It's not often that people take a look at the forest through the trees and make a significant change in their lives. With that in mind I wish you well if you are indeed serious about a life of sailing. But a career on a real sailboat is a long shot.
Look, you are still young.. If you want to make a career at sea I suggest the Merchant Marines. Head to King's Point, NY and start a new life.. See link..

Apply with FWC (Florida Wildlife Control). If you get hired, you can move down here. You get your own boat and truck. Work half the year and on the water. State retirement and free health insurance.

nd wrote that post as if he was reading my mind (except for the working on the sailboat part). I've hated my job since day one. I'm also a outdoor active person that has a sitdown office job. My dream job is working as a bartender in the Playboy mansion. Even Hugh would think I'm too old for that job now. The only thing that stops any of us from living our dreams is laziness. We get comfortable in well paid deadend jobs and watch our dreams slowly fade away with time.

Google "Sailboat Charters" and start calling companies to see if they need somebody. You'll find them all up and down both East & West coasts, as well as the Gulf Shore. If that's what you want, you'll be able to get your foot in the door somewhere. Check out: http://www.mainsailcharters.com/index.html
You can actually view hundreds of their Monohull, Multihull, and Motor Yachts along with pictures and profiles of the crew! Just remember to give your TW friends a discount when you get to Captain your own ship!

I concur. Work that tourist angle. Take a true blue sailing course so you have more than just "going around the lake". Then try starting a small business. First on weekends and see what kind of demand you can drag in. Then weed out work and become perhaps part time or seasonal.

My dad dislikes his job right now to, he gets through by guiding for my aunties guide outfitters all the time. Usually just takes a couple weeks off in the fall and tours you crazy Americains around the mountains of BC.

    Good luck with your endevour!

Find something you love to do, be the best at it, and be happy. While you're still young enough to do it.

Take it from an old fart that didn't.

Many people hate their job and most do nothing more then change into the same job but a different location because of the comfort factor.

If you truly hate it and really want change then go for it, staying in a job you hate isn't going to get any better and it's no different then being stuck in a relationship you hate.
The small things that bug you only continue to add up so before long it not only effects your attitude but also your health and everything else an everybody around you.

X2. When I was your age, ND, I realized that I hated HATED my job. I would sit in my car looking up at my office, just shacking my head. Every morning my secretary would say "Goodmorning!" and I would want to strangle her. My job was horrible. One day, I walked in, grabbed my shit, and left. That next week, I was working in a different Carreer, and much more happy. Before long, I was makeing twice what I was at my old job. My folks used to tell me "Do what you love, and the money will come". Welll, it did. For a long time too, until I was laid off.......now I make no money..........and Im board out of my mind. Hmmm.......not sure if this was as insperational as I was hoping it to be. :anonymous:
