I just about pissed my pants reading this. But I have some real-life suggestions.I actually like my job, but I don't like sitting indoors either. I'd rather be outside all day too. But here's what I do that helps me "deal" with it. I bring my lunch to work, eat it quick, then take a 30-40 minute bike ride. I found a route around the neighborhood and I bike maybe 6-7 miles total. That or I take a walk. Anything to get out of the office for a bit. I also stay in shape plus its free. I found my bike in the garbage, so you don't need anything fancy.

When I get home and if there's light, I go do something stupid like sweep the driveway, clean the truck, or something like that. Either that or I work in the shop for a bit. Just gets your mind off things.

Those things sound stupid, but it helps me anyway.

If an opportunity present itself, pretend it's a drunk girl and get all over it. Seriously, once you've hit the point you're at then there's real freedom in life. I dropped everything a few years back and cruised the country via motorcycle for a month before spending a few months rock climbing.

Somewhere through all that I ended up meeting someone who owned his own business and had a need for my programming skills. I've been happily employed since, and since he's aware of the state of mind I was in when he met me, things like taking time off for races and random trips are expected.

You know what you want to do. Just follow through and you'll be amazed at how well things work out.

    Oh, and you suck.

yeah, charleston has a pretty big boat population with alot of charter boats and harbor cruises and stuff. but i need to figure out how to get some experience.... coast guard might be cool. if i did that i'd want to be stationed way up north on one of those ice breakers. i need to look into getting my dive license. that would at least allow me to work on a tourist dive boat if i couldn't get on a sailboat

i've thought about that but that seems like trying to find your way out of a maze blindfolded. too small of an area and too little of a chance of someone willing to hire someone with my lack of experience. Thanks for the advice though

i've always been good at reading people so i usually do well at the poker table. i actually toyed with the idea of moving to the coast and taking advantage of all the drunk tourists on the casino boats who are really only there to lose money and drink free booze. those boats can be really profitable if you stay sober. i won $1000 in one hand before. but that kind of living just doesn't sound smart or stable to me

when you're a captain let me know. I'll be happy to be your first mate or maybe your "co captain" :)

I'd work for under 10k a year if it meant traveling the world on a sailboat and a free bunk and food

wow, you learn something everyday. i thought the merchant marines was something you joined and they briefly train you then throw you on a boat. i didn't know there was a whole education and academy. not a bad idea at all but the last thing i can do right now is get into more debt, i'm still paying off my last education. but thanks for the suggestion

that would actually be really cool

they call it sellin out for a reason. once you start making real money its hard to give it up for peanuts. but you're forgetting fear. its scary thinking about quiting a secure job with lots of money for taking a pot shot at a dream

thanks for the info. i'll ask if they need anyone to help them "drive one of them floating water cars" and see how that goes :)

whats her number? i need to talk to her about some..... stuff....

i've seen "deadliest catch".... i don't think so!

Thanks! i have no idea where to find a sailing course though

you sound like my dad, which is something i'm trying to avoid. he hates that he didn't do what he wanted when he was young enough to do it

most people are afraid of dying. i'm not afraid of dying but i'm terrified of dying while doing a job and living a life i hate. i'm afraid the stress and unhappiness from my job is going to kill me

thanks for the response. i know what you're talking about, looking at your office and fighting back tears. i wanna cry every morning i have to wake up and go in

This wont exactly consist of sailing, but you would definitely be on a boat, and around a lot of water. Take a look into oceanic surveying. You seem to have the smarts, so learning the ins and outs of surveying would only take a matter of time. The pay is also good. Anywhere from 30 to 45 dollars an hour once you know what you are doing.

Heres one of the many companies in this line of work.

thats good advice that might help me out in the short term, but in the long run i need a life change

you suck too. but thanks for the response. i figured you'd have something to say. you were sitting in traffic one day and decided "hey, i want to race the baja" and look at you now! you've sunk tens of thousands into your truck just so you could break it and not race..... good for you....

but seriously, i do admire your "fuck it, i'm going for it attitude". Hey, how bout we sell your truck, empty your bank account, and sell my truck and buy a boat. we can figure out this whole "sailing" thing together. i think our first venture should be sailing around the world. one condition, i get to wear the captains hat

that would be pretty cool. but i'm not sure where you got the idea that i have the smarts.... you're probably the only person on this board who would ever say such a thing :p

you know...when i graduated college...one of my old roommates and i had a plan to buy a pirate ship (or just a sailboat with a jolly roger)...and roll around the bahamas and crap and do nothing but drink and pillage the ladies we find on various islands

maybe now would be a good time to look into that

    what is that?

yeah, that would be a good idea. the problem is you need a source of income or a large bank account because maintaining a sailboat is expensive as hell. i found that out the hard way. but if you're interested let me know, i'll go pillage the bahamas with you. i call deebs on all the hot chicks, you have to be my wingman and tag and bag the ugo's and the fatties
