I want to purchase a hand gun for home defense. My wife is against it. She says she won't feel comfortable with a gun in the house. Has anyone had this issue? if so how did you convince your wife to get one?

Took my wife to the range and let her get comfortable with firing a revolver. She still prefers to use the can of wasp spray as her first line of defense at home but there are also other weapons easy to hand.

Do you have car insurance? do you even think twice about paying for it? A gun is just another form of insurance. Its better to have and not need then the other way around

That is my other reason for getting it, but I'm not going to go into the politics because its forbidden here.

I think i just need to take her to the range and have her get comfortable with a gun.

I was once that wife that didn't agree with it. My husband bought it~ I was upset but it was something he wanted so there was no sense in arguing over it. Is it that she is afraid of them? My issue was I didn't know how to use it and It made me totally uncomfortable with my kids around. Hubs took me to the range showed me how to use it and the whole time I was a nervous wreck. I still don't love the gun, but I feel alot safer and I know how to use it if need be.

Good. I dont care for this DEM vs REP stuff anyways. I am just a good old back woods gun loving man. As long as i am not directly affected by it, i could care less sometimes. Back on topic about your wife.

Gun range would be good, ruger makes a pink .380, i have shot it, good for little hands, not much kick, not too loud. My Ruger 9mm concealed carry is just a hair bigger, and my 4'11" mom loves it.

Look up some home invasion stories and traveling abduction stories and have her read them. What could you do if somone entered your house or got on your ass while traveling? What could you do if you were witnessing a child abduction? Do you have the tools to stop it? The key is training and proper permitting, got to be safe.

Silly point. Everyone is free to do as they want, it's a free country. But I've never heard of someone being accidentally killed by car insurance. And that's where I'm gonna leave it, i will not start a thread on gun ownership.

OP, if you feel it's important to you, find a way to make your wife comfortable with it (gun safe, concealed weapon class, etc.)

Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
Like others have said, I let my wife go out and fire it and she kind of liked it (she won't admit that too most). Then don't skimp on any sort of safe if you have kids, something she knows the kids have no way of getting into.

Tell her that at the same time you buy a handgun you will buy a closet safe for it. It bolts in your closet and is opened with a combination. This will keep it safe from children and unwanted adults. I have timed myself and from the bed, to the closet, unlock the safe and pull the gun out is 5 seconds.

Basically I just went out and bought one without permission. I got in trouble but felt the safety of my family was worth the week or 2 of tension. She got over it and I sleep better knowing it's ready to go if needed.

Like others have mentioned. Get her to the range or your local place to shoot and Start with a small caliber even if its a pellet gun to get her comfortable with guns. My wife loves to shoot and has her collection of guns as well. Also Shoots with me in Trap shooting competitions and has one a couple of Turkey shoots. But just be patient with her and give it time. Here is a pic of her and her new Ruger 10/22.

Perhaps car insurance was not the best analogy... think of it this way. Did you buy a "Smart Car" to drive on the road or something more substantial like a "Toyota Tacoma" that will survive a collision? There are many many bad drivers out there and some that intentionally drive drunk or medicated....

There are now more guns out there, more social unrest, there have been Riots in the UK and the US. It is just insurance against a problem that there is no other tool that will help.

p.s. My wife does not like handguns... but she is much more interested in learning shotgun. :):D I don't mind buying a shotgun too!
