Retainer shim? Is this a flywheel or flexplate?

Flywheels are on MTs. You're dealing with a flexplate

Sorry, I don't have much knowledge on Auto Tacomas, I'd imagine the shim goes behind the flexplate though so that it engages the torque converter at the right depth but don't quote me on it. @BartMaster1234 might know

Are you referring to the 'Rear End Plate' in the diagram?

No,I know about that one. This one is chrome or silver that has the 10 bolt holes bolts on to the flywheel itself. It appears to maybe bolt on between the crankshaft spacer & flywheel.Just didn't want go thru all of trouble & it be in the wrong place

Oh wait I know what you're talking about. It's the spacer that goes on the flexplate after you insert it onto the crankshaft.

That spacer thing, right? The order is crankshaft, flexplate, spacer, bolts.

Let's clear something up too cause itll help people help you.

This is a flexplate, automatic vehicles have flexplates to join the crank to the tranny input.

    [IMG]download.jpg

This is a flywheel, a clutch is joined to this and then connects to the input of a manual tranny.

They have different operating conditions and needs for assembly so it's best to use the correct term.

I should add while you have the flexplate off, you should really replace the rear main seal. When I did my 4WD swap it was perfectly fine but it's more of a preventative maintenance measure since it's already right there.

You need to be very careful with the mating of the flexplate and torque converter. My torque converter was warped unbeknownst to me and ate through two flexplates. It shattered when I was doing about 40 MPH and left me stranded on a big intersection as I slowly lost each gear until the truck wouldn't move anymore.

Yeah, the little thin piece. So it goes between the flexplate & the bolts. The one shown apears to be carbon color.Mine is chrome color. Also my engine is a 2.4.I took an engine from a 98 std to put in my 99 automatic. That's what started it all.Had to pull the pilot bearing from the 98.When i took the 99 a part,I was moving to fast.Mistake!!!

It's Chrome the lighting just makes it look different. I don't recall which way the flexplate is supposed to face, but you will see a little dirt shadow or wear from where the spacer would go on the flexplate it's pretty obvious.

What did you do to the engine again?

The engine I pulled the truck from I had 157000 on it & was well maintained.Don't why the guy parted it out.I crank it up & ran it before my friend & I took it out. Also fyi.The truck was given to me.I have a buyer for it when I put it back together.

The imprints are there from the torque converter side.I was just not sure which side the spacer came from

Thanks to all of you for your input on this.Even though this is sale vehicle,I have driven Toyotas for years & love them. They are my import preference.Unfortunately, this one was driven by a High School kid & it was hammered on til it started knocking.Put an engine in a 01 Corolla for my daughter.Same thing.College kid ran it out of oil.Not trying to jump the subject at hand, just thought I would share this. Thanks again!!!

OK so I took out my engine and when I took these apart I didn’t realize what order they came out, months later I’m finally putting it back together and I just want to verify that this is the order that it goes in
