Hello my peeps. Got back from getting oil changed where I was told I have a pretty good size leak coming from the steering fluid pump. Nothing leaking into my garage floor yet that I can see so I wanted to get a second opinion from you fine folks. They quoted me $700.00 for a Toyota pump, I guess third party’s make a noise, hoses and coolant. Seems high to me but it is “lets makeup inflation hikes” everywhere.

How hard is it to replace on my own? I’ve done my suspension and mods on my 2017 SR5 V6 4x4 longbed.

Thanks in advance for any threads or advice.

Are you sure it’s not a timing cover leak?

    is the fluid low?

most people misdiagnose the pump when it’s actually an engine oil leak.

I was told it was and they topped it off. How do I diagnose the engine leak. Get under and look for one, yes?

Definitely put your eyes on alleged leak. Also check PS fluid, and watch it.

Okay. For sure. None on the ground and I have been parked for a few days in the garage before the oil change today. Okay I will camp under my truck and watch. I will take some pictures and report back.

Last question. Do I need to have the engine running to diagnose steering pump or engine leak?

Also most 3rd gen ps leaks are due to worn rack and pinion, check your tie rod boots and see if they are wet

Johnny5ve you have to get in there with a light and start at the ps pump, make sure it’s full and look around, inspect the hoses then move down to the rack and pinion. If it’s all dry start looking around the engine in that area.

    Before I’d drop 7 bills, if I didn’t see a leak I’d get a UV dye kit

how bad is it? Only a class-1? (Weeping, no droplets forming). If your not having any problems, you can also do nothing… my kids Jeep had a class-1 PS leak… topped off maybe half an ounce per month… $10 in fluid versus $$$

Agree on the dye test. One can buy an awful lot of PS Fluid for $700! When the time comes to replace it, definitely buy an OEM replacement part.

I had dealer replace leaking power steering pump at 62k. Dealer noted at 50k (slight weep), and replaced when it got worse over time. No timing cover leak. All dry after replacing. Used extended warranty. $725 cost was on paperwork.

Put a piece of clean cardboard under your truck each night. The first sign of a spot, take the cardboard to a knowledgeable mechanic & he can tell you exactly what the fluid is.

Never had a power steering pump fail in any of my toyota's, but i had to replace the corroded lines, and new steering rack on my gen1 tundra that were leaking bad. It wasn't too bad a job, but cost me nearly $1k for all the parts.

Clean everything that is oil coated with degreaser and monitor. Don't order any parts until the leak location is confirmed.
