I agree. Have allergy testing done if you have not already. Sounds like you may already be on top of it.

    De-badged and blacked out
Seat covers and steering wheel cover would be a cheaper fix.

Have you considering getting the interior redone? Go to a custom shop and ask for some sample of fabrics they use. Have your wife place that samples in the current car and see if there is a reaction.

You may want to consider checking a chuck of the foam within the seats as well. Also contact your local news company to raise awareness, otherwise it will always e an issue. I am sure some environmental group would love to protest some dye factory some where!

Just to add another option, and I'm guessing you are set on the Tacoma, but 3rd Gen 4Runners run the same V6 and are solid as well (Years 1999-02 seem the most improved, each have features added/taken away). Albeit just as hard to find with low miles/4x4 as 02-04 Tacomas.

Sorry to hear about your wife. Some people just have the misfortune of being reactive to chemicals and such. Like that girl in Britain whose skin develops acidic burns if she gets caught in rain/water.

I know of a guy in Phoenix, who built a house out of clay and other organic materials. His wife is allergic to pretty much all house hold chemicals including paint, carpet, etc. He came to my high school about 12 years ago and was promoting the high tech institute for all high school students in the East Valley of Phoenix metro. The house would not even have an air conditioner. That's insane when you think that our temps get up to 115-120 in the summer. Apparently he is able to maintain the temp in the house at about 75-80 in the summer with out the a/c just by having a garden and other grass on the roof.

i also remember seeing an article with an architect who did something similar in india using local bldg materials and keeping the house cool just by design and no a/c

    and to jdtemple
as we are getting a lot of problems with the plastic such as the console we are a little leery of going that far
some of our recent ideas have been checking out older versions of the same truck and seeing how much effect normal wear and tear has on the reaction

Houses (in the desert) built with thick adobe (clay + straw) walls (12" minimum) are amazingly well insulated--cool in the summer & warm in the winter. A friend of mine lived in one when I was a kid growing up in Yuma, AZ and their house was always comfortable, even on the hottest days with no AC.

BTW- Some gen 1 Tacos have an interior color called "oak" which is a combo of light and dark tan--no black. I would also think that a truck/car that's over 10 years old would not be outgassing much chemicals from the interior. New vehicle interiors outgas LOTS of junk in the first couple of years.

i will keep an eye out for "oak" interiors
i drove a 4 banger 5spd manual for the first time in a while and couldn't believe how much more fun it is than an automatic.

both my truck and the mazda3 are located in oakland.
the mazda is a hoot to drive with the 6spd and performance suspension
truck is solid and has all the extra bits you get with the trd off/rd package

i wish they made those first gen prerunners w/2.7 with 5spd's
