    Hey -

New to Tacomas and looking to get into one. My basic research has led me to look at 13-15 Tacomas. However, it seems I am about 15 years too late looking for one haha. They do seem to be fantastic trucks.

I am also very interested in 1st gens, especially 03-04.

Are there any other years that people would recommend to look for? Also, what are some years to avoid?

    All advice is greatly appreciated

    Best!

Both 1st and 2nd gens are good trucks, like any vehicle how it was taken care of will have a big impact on how long it will last.

Frame rust is a big issue on all generations that spent time in the rust belt or anywhere else salt/chemicals are present if it wasn't treated so that is the first thing to look at on any potential purchase no matter where in the country it is..

Years to avoid in the 2nd gen would be 05 and early 06 (weak engine mounts and headgaskets on the 4.0) and 2012 4.0 (1st year of SAIS on the V6 and had a high failure rate, system was improved on subsequent years but still can have issues).

If you go for a 4wd make sure the 4wd system works and shifts through all the ranges, if it's a TRD OffRoad make sure the rear locker engages in 4L as well as checking/replacing the vent hoses on all the actuators should you buy it.

Thank you so much for your advice. I do appreciate it.

I had no idea about avoiding the 05-06/12 years, and certainly will.

    Thank you so much again!
