Good looking truck man, love the color :spy:

Why does it look like the TG bumper is bent/angled back a little bit?

Wow! That looks nice man. If you don't mind me asking, about how much did this run you?
How easy is it to clean (I mean is it a PITA to wash)?
How long have you had your truck "painted" this way? Any fading?
Is it just the standard Line-X bed liner? Or one of their other coatings?
Do you have any more pics showing the whole truck from different angles?

Sorry for all of the questions, but I'm seriously considering getting this done.

If you are refering to dexterdogs post how can you get a quality job and low price when material alone will cost a grand, I only painted the bumpers, tail gate and box on mine and spent $500 on material, not including I replaced my air dryer, ran some new lines from the compressor, and bought a new Gravity feed gun, another $400.

I just went and got some quotes at a few places today including 2 Maacos and I got a quote for 1400 to just paint the one side that I have problems with and my tail gate and then the first Maaco wanted $1200 to do my truck and he wanted extra to paint the inside of my bed and extra for my bumper and I am not about to pay $1200 for a Maaco job even if they aren't too bad for their high end jobs and so I went to one final Maaco across Houston town and after talking a bunch he said he would do the whole truck including the inside of the bed, my front TG bumper black, color-match my rear window surround since the black paint is gone and is now just metal and this includes stripping the whole thing, repriming the truck and then doing a base/clear combination paint and the total will be $740. So I will be dropping my truck off on Friday morning and taking the plunge so I will keep you guys posted but the guy seemed like a pretty stand up guy and didn't try to over sell me and was honest so I hopefully won't regret it.

Wow, $740 for all that sounds good (depending on what the end-product looks like of course) Remember to post pictures when your'e done. I am curious to see that. I have heard good and bad about Maaco - mostly not good.

Unless they royally fuck it up...

...I'm sure the paint job will be good enough considering you're going to be going wheeling in it.

You get what you pay for, after you get the trk back look at how it was masked, where they used a DA sander and accidentally hit the door handles, window trim and glass, primer over spray under the wheel wells, the next test will be when its washed in a few months and the paint starts to flake off in areas that required detail sanding and preparation( around door handles, the trim next to the windshield ect ). The quality of the material they use is the cheapest on the market, the clear will be falling off in a matter of time.

    good luck!

When painting a vehicle, you can cut corners on the paint, since there are so many manufacturers that produce paint that can look really good. But there are 2 areas you just CAN'T cut corners on: Prep work, and clear coat. A properly prepped vehicle will allow the new paint to adhere to the substrate of the vehicle. (Substrate being the surface to be painted, weather metal, fiberglass, or plastic) The second part is the clear coat. You really need a good clear because the clear is what decides the "shine" as well as protects the color from fading. ALL PAINT WILL FADE if you do not put a clear coat on top. The gloss of the paint job is directly related to your clear coat. These cheap paint jobs that you see advertized have the biggest problem with prep work. That is where they save the money on. They scuff up the larger areas of your original paint, then spray on the paint. Those cheap jobs only use single stage paint, where the base and the clear go on together. One pass, let it dry, deliver vehicle. THAT is how they do if cheap, and that is why they chip and fade. It takes work to do a good paint job, therfore if you want a good job, you have to pony up the Benjamins! If anyone has any doubts on if I know what I am talking about, check out my build thread.

I have done all the hi-pro mods for a life time, since I got this truck at a great price, I will be happy with showroom new.
Thank-you BamaToy! I was going to write about the same thing last nite but I am worried people will think i am a know-it- all. if i don't know something I will tell you, ex. computers... but car, trucks, and THIS, I know.I
I have heard so many tales about maaco, none good. this is where slimy used car dealer go do for a quick paint job. Good quality auto paint cost money, and the labor for a good paint job is about 3/4 the cost of a good job. good paint, sealants and hardeners, are $$$$$$$.
My first car was a 72 Mach1 351C. bright yellow, or faded by the time I got her in late 1980. the last thing I did before HS graduation was a paint job. I had already with a friend, sanded her down, and primed her all the way, she has chips and some rust spots from prev. owner, and my mom wrote the insurance for a good body shop in town, and the owner helped me out, only charged me labor cost and paint cost, and to get the good bright yellow, it had to come from Germany because of lead, it was $450 in 1983,
and total job was 850.00 even. the car not only looked like a show car, but it never chipped, faded and orange peel, or runs. and when I traded her for a 85 GT they gave me 6000.00 on the spot, for their showroom.
You do get what you pay for, I just hate to see people throw there money away to crooks.

Nice first car. That was my second. My first car was a 1970 Mustang Grande with a Boss 302. My second was a 72 Mach 1 with the 351 Cleavor. (Bonus points to anyone that knows what a Cleavor engine is!)

Yeah, I get the "know it all" comment at times, but I shrug it off. you will usually find that everyone have things they are very knowledgeable about. That doesn't make them a know it all, it makes them a "I know WTF I am talking about" person. I know cars and trucks... gasoline, diesel as well as hybrids. I know how to diagnose and repair pretty much all parts of a vehicle from transmissions, to engines, axles, transfer cases, electrical and computer systems, etc. that's all I have done for nearly 30 years, so yeah, I do know about what I say I do. Of course get me in a law office, or a stock trade office, or something not in the auto field, and I will tell you I probably don't know Mr. Jack Shyt! lol.

HATS OFF TO YOU! Not many people know the differance between the Cleavland heads or the Windsor!
I was raised around cars, my grandfather was a mechanic on B-25s in the AAF, and he could tune a car, points plugs condenser, and timing by ear!
He would get it set, and the tell me to double check with a timing light for the fun of it.

I know first hand the shitty kind of work they do. they always have done it.
I need to have mine repainted but until the rest of the truck is restored, and I have put away the right amount of money, I will sand, and touch up, and she might look ruff, but she will be running right.
for a year that mach i was battle ship gray, but the way she ran no one ever said a word.

I've seen three Maaco paint jobs.

Two were deliberately dropped off when Maaco was slow, hoping for a better attention to detail. This appeared to work. Both vehicles looked tip top afterwards. One was an S10 Blazer, one was a Cadillac. I never saw the Blazer again, the owner sold it. The Cadillac is my grandma's. Three years later, it is fading out badly.

The third was my brother's truck. They had it a week. Supposedly they were busy. It shows. There is dirt and crap in the paint, and there is one run on the edge of the bed. However, five years later, the truck still looks the same. He paid $1200 for them to strip the truck to the bare metal (peeling), prime, paint. He paid extra for a higher quality paint.:)

My advice is to wait till they are slow, or get the manager to guarantee that there will be no outright sloppy prep work (not blowing off the truck with air after sanding it down). Then pay extra for the quality paint. Ask lots of questions about how they are going to go about the work. My brother had driving lights on his front bumper that could have been easily removed. They left them on, and painted around them. Since he was changing the color, the painted grille did not get painted behind the lights.

Lots of questions, conversation with the manager before committing, and pay the extra money for quality paint!:D

Will meet my needs. I am having them send pictures as they prep / paint it to verify its what I want since I am out of town. I also got them to paint t trail gear bumper and rear window trim for free. I dropped it off this morning so I will let you guys know the updates

I've had two cars painted at Maaco when they had a location in Bmt. Mixed results but can't complain as to how cheap it was. I've also had pro jobs done on classic cars and ALWAYS felt ripped off. Next beater I need painted I'm trying one of the above methods. I can't really do my truck now as I would have to change the color. (Although it's getting so bad that day is probably coming.) I just hate to lose the metallic.

I vote for the quality paint job. You got an investment and it boosts your resale value. I think you'd lower the value with a cheap one.

No, he has rust. It needs paint. It will be worth no more than well kept one. If you paint a 5000 dollar truck with a 2000 dollar paint job, you don't get a 7000 dollar truck. I hear ya about liking a nice job, but you'll never recoup the cost. It's not an investment. And believe me, most places 2000 dolar jobs are NOT impressive. It takes that much in paint to do it right.
