Pulled My CV axle and all this crap came with it! Is this a shredded needle bearing? I stuck a magnet in the diff and this is what I got. Does anyone know what that round spinging looking thing is?

You done fucked up now A-Aaron!

The round springamathing is a round springamathing, it's used to hold mechanical tension on the inside of the lip seal to keep the gear oil in it should be from your outer diff/axle seal.

Beyond that looks like you pulled a couple of pins out of the needle bearing they will come out fairly freely they're held in by grease and the CV shaft itself they've got just a little little bit of mechanical captivation by the inner race but can sometimes fall out if worn a bit.

That toothed ring does looks like you may have pulled out a piece of the inner race of the needle bearing.

I would strongly strongly caution you to in the very least pull the drain plug on the diff and attempt to flush it somehow and slowly turn the diff by hand and if you meet any kind of resistance or crunching noises you're going to have to pull that diff and split it to get every last piece of anything out or you will be doing a ring and pinion.

    I agree.

You might rig up something with a magnet and go in from the drain hole and “hope” you get it all out.

If you can get a puller or the ecgs tool square behind it you should be able to remove it.

In my 1st gen that I did the ECGS bushing replacement for the needle bearing refused to come out in one piece even with the tool, I had to carefully chisel and slide hammer the pieces of the outer race out until it was eventually just mangled enough to no longer press fit.

OP you may have the same unfortunate but hopefully not, when I did the ECGS bushing on my 2nd gen my needle bearing was much more loose and pulled out pretty easily with the tool, the ECGS tool pulls by the outer race so here's hoping for you.

In your situation I would definitely try the ECGS bushing and their puller before trying the mangling route.

    Good luck!

I would absolutely do this. Go in through your drain plug with a cylindrical magnet and keep fishing until you don't pull anything else out. It'll be a crap shoot but it's better than nothing. I'd be nervous about that one for a while for fear of crap floating around in that front diff while your driving down the road churning butter.

Just pulled my CVs and the needle bearing putting in new Napa CVs and the EGCS bushing plus seals both sides.
Get the EGCS tools with the bushing and seals and those CVs you show are not OEM but probably aftermarket.
Here are pics of what the needle bearing should look like (after I pulled it) and the tools.
Hope this helps. The bushing took all the play out of that sloppy CV in the Clamshell.

After you get what you can find out refill and spin the axles and then dump the gear oil again and see what else drops out.
Or you can pull the front diff out and rebuild depends on internal damage, time and money.
The passenger side has a large roller bearing behind the seal and no needle bearing so no EGCS bushing goes over there.

I remember your thread from a couple weeks ago. You could have/should have just continued this in that thread.

Either way I feel your front diff needs major attention. Also need to find out why your axle popped out like it did. The way your axle was hanging out, doesn't happen for no reason.

My needle bearing grenaded in a similar way. The axle pops out since the needle bearing isnt holding onto it anymore so I wouldnt worry too much about that. Like others said above the ECGS bearing tool and a new sleeve from them worked really well. When the axle pops out like that it can cause some damage to the diff seal mentioned in this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/front-diff-seal.475542/ so i replaced that as well. Then I fished out all the extra chunks inside through every hole into the diff there was with a magnet. After reinstalling the the new bearing I bought some extra diff fluid, filled it and did some driving in 4wd either on the street or with all 4 wheels on stands. I think I did 2 or 3 flushes of the diff to remove everything.

Here is the ECGS bearing website: https://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-8536125-toyota-8-clamshell-bushing-eliminates-needle-bearing.html
