Ya... the first part was pretty deep.
The last line went the other way.

1- All guns are always loaded.
2- Never point the gun at something you do not want to destroy.
3- Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
4- Be sure of your target and what is beyond.

So simple but people still screw it up.

OK. I am going to admit I did because maybe my story will possibly save the life of someone. You don't know me and you don't know my IQ. I am not stupid as others have accused everyone that has a ND. People make mistakes. I made a mistake and have learned from it. I hope you do also.

I went coyote hunting with a friend which we've done countless times. I didn't get the opportunity to shoot at one so we packed up and went home. My friend was in charge of checking to make sure the ammo was out of the magazines and nothing is in the chambers of the rifles while I got the other stuff in the truck. We both are very experienced around guns and are cautious about putting them back in the cases without making sure they are disarmed. When I got home I put my Remington 700 22-250 back in my gun safe.

The first mistake I made was to watch that extremely biased TV program that CNBC did on the Remington 700 and how it could self fire. The second mistake I made was assume that my friend successfully cleared my gun. The magazine was cleared but there was still one in the chamber which I didn't know about. I only have one handgun in my safe that is hot and ready to go. My 13 other guns are always stored without any ammo in them. Curious if I could make my 700 go click as the program said it would, I went to the safe and tried it. It didn't go off as they said it would. I like to leave the bolt spring relaxed so I pulled the trigger.

It was like I never heard it go off. My small man-cave room amplified the sound so much that I just went immediately deaf. I had the barrel pointing up and away from me so the round went truth the ceiling, both sides of my heating vents, through 1.125" of plywood, the padding, the carpet, and through the living room ceiling. It never made it through the insulation in the roof.

Immediately I ran upstairs to see who I killed. Fortunately no one was in the living room. It went through the carpet where my dog sometimes sleeps. My wife, as you can imagine, was very upset at me. I was physically shaking.

I broke the sacred rule of always treating EVERY firearm as though it was loaded. I assumed that because it got checked before it went into the safe and no one else gets in the safe, that it was cleared. Even though you check a gun ALWAYS treat it as though you missed something and there is one in the pipe.

I'm a deeply religious man and thank the Lord each day that no one was harmed and that I learned a valuable lesson. I am now a gun checking Nazi each and every time I so much as even touch a gun.

    ***

On a somewhat humorous note: Many years ago I helped move my sister-in-law's piano out of my in-laws house. When it got pulled away from the wall it was evident that there was a bullet in the back of the frame. My father-in-law admitted that 10 years earlier he was cleaning his 30-06 in the basement and he had a ND. It went through the ceiling, floor, 50 lbs of flour in the pantry, sheetrock, stud, sheetrock, and 2 inches in the hardwood piano frame.

Maybe that's what made my wife not divorce me when I had my ND.

I watched that program as well and wondered the same. But I did not test out the theory.... the main way to prevent a nd is to be aware that you are holding a firearm. No judgement because I do not know you. But I wouldnt feel safe around you with a firearm. Thats just me though.

I know there are perfect people to whom this will never happen .........until it happens.

It can happen to anyone, to think otherwise is foolish. A good safety reminder for us all.

no i have not. i have been shooting a glock since i was like 11 and i’ll be 21 in jan. dad has been shooting glock longer and a lot more than i have with work and never had one. neither one of my brothers who have shot glock a bunch have had one. every time i pick it up i check it, and take the mag out if it is in and keep it out. but we don’t store the mag in the gun any ways. it would have never happened if he checked it as soon as he picked it up, just saying..

Okay. 100% responsible, all the time. Believing that is how you get complacent. That's all I'm saying.

It is a huge deal. NDs are a huge deal. However believing that it could never happen to you because you're 100% responsible all the time, you're too safe -- that's how you become complacent and that's how NDs happen. Don't let your guard down. Don't ever think you're too good, you're too safe, you're too responsible to have an ND. It could happen to anyone. x2. i think. 100% it’s avoidable IMHO. don’t put your finger on the trigger unless you have check and rechecked and even rechecked and made sure it is unloaded. and just about every time i lock the slide back so that everyone around me knows that it is safe.

when I have my glock, when not disabled or reloading, ALWAYS has a round in the chamber. Glocks even have a little button on the side of the slide to show that there is a round in the chamber. It is not hard to check a weapon (ecspecially a glock) pull the slide back.

I agree that it is 100% responsiblity
