New to the forum, typical weekend warrior that was trying to fix a shifting issue with my Transmission and now I think I have caused a world of problems. I will see if I can give a run down that makes any amount of sense.

    2006 Toyota Tacoma, 4.0L 4x4.

I was having problems with my Truck not shifting into over drive I first realized this when I wasn't able to use my Cruise Control on the highway. I have to shift the transmission beyond drive into 4th and back to drive to engage the OD. When I shifted straight from park to Drive the D light on the dash doesn't show. I borrowed a code reader and it showed P0705. After a lot of research I figured it must be the Neutral Safety switch, did tons of internet reading before attempting to take it apart looked like no big deal so away I go.

I have the truck in Neutral so the shaft is vertical like I would expect it to be. I was able to get the 12mm bolt out no problem, but the 22mm Nut that is held on by the washer with tabs over the shaft will not come off. I have hit it with PB blast for 3 days. Yesterday while trying to remove the nut both the nut and the shaft turned at the same time, I did not have to apply much force for this to happen. I heard a clunk from the transmission. Now the the nut and the shaft are rotated to the left. I climbed in the truck and the consul shifter had moved from neutral to drive. I put it in park and look at the shaft on the Neutral Safety switch and it is now vertical, I thought it would be rotated slight right of vertical while being in park. I decide to hook the switch and battery back up to see what the dash indicator is saying.

The shift indicator on the dash is showing the truck is in 3rd gear not park like it should be. Now I can't shift out of park and I obviously can't start the truck because of the Safety switch reading that it is in gear.

I have no idea what to do from here. Maybe I have broke the shaft that protrudes from the transmission? Maybe I broke the Switch itself? Anyone ever have this much trouble removing the Nut or have any insight as to why the nut and the shaft are stuck together or what I should do from here?

Sorry for the novel I am at a complete loss as to what to do now. Thanks for anyone who has any insight into this.

I have a gen 3 tacoma and this almost exact thing happened to me. Difficulty getting it into drive from park. I was able to get the nut off and the washer, but it was all rusty. Then the park/neutral safety switch broke apart while taking it off. Then I had a little piece of the aluminum part fused/corroded onto the iron shaft. What a nightmare, and no room to work. That exhaust pipe is in the worst spot, along with the coolant hoses. I was able to drill a couple of small holes and eventually able to bang the heck out of it to remove the fused aluminum part off (because my drill bits broke in the part). Tomorrow I'll re-install the new switch.
I started this project with it in neutral, but I put it park after the switch was removed as I didn't feel comfortable leaving it neutral overnight before I could get back to it. I'm hoping I didn't F-something up with it now after reading your post.

Yeah. The picture below says it all.
You are MUCH better off cutting the nut off.
If you torque on the shaft too much, you can cause it to leak behind the NSS.
And if it does, it isn’t good. The seal can only be replaced by opening up the transmission.
