Never go 10,000 miles on Oil change! It will start burning oil!

Proven fact, that Toyotas will burn oil after 100000 miles if you change oil every 10000 miles! Never go over 5000 miles on any oil change on a Toyota! Never! I know the manuel says 10000 miles, but that just covers Toyotas but and warranty! It will start burning oil if you dont change every 5000 miles! That is from a 43 year mechanic, that owns many Toyotas!

I would have to agree with your statement to a degree. I always had a rule of thumb when it came to proper oil change intervals, back when I drove VW vans and bugs. For every quart of oil = 1000 miles...

I never do extended OCI’s for direct injection engines, personally. Not all oil is the same, by far, and some have much higher quality friction modifiers vs others but I generally agree with what you are saying but blanket statements don’t tend to be accurate. With that said, I generally do 5-6k OCI’s and I use oil with a lot of ZDDP. Oil is cheap. This keeps wear metals down as well even if TBN’s are still high.

 

I know it's overkill, but I change every 3000 miles religiously. Cheap insurance and it only takes me 20min.

Manuel says 10000 miles, but the proclaimers say 500 more.

 

10,000 miles would be about 2.5 yrs. for me.
I change it more frequently than that.

I love to hear folks use the "cheap insurance" justification for wasting money. It's almost as good as the "peace of mind" excuse.

He also adds, changing at the "right" interval is more important that the kind of oil. I personally use only full synthetic.
Is he "the" expert? I'm gonna say no but he does appear to be an expert, with clearly more experience than myself and probably many others around here. JM2CW of course.

 

I tell my kids every 5,000 or at the beginning of Summer and the beginning of Winter. Easier for them to remember.

I concur that every 5k is the sweet spot.
Every 3k is not needed and every 10k is a too much.
