A big part of the oil condition was my engine did not brake-in til 14k miles, so there was a bit of blow by. It's now time for the next oil change, and the oil is still yellow, so I'll wait for 6k before I change it.

That's overly long for break-in... What do you attribute the long break-in period to?

Oil catch can. It would fill between oil changes. When I did my third oil change it was dry. 1st change @ 3700 miles, 2nd @ 14,000 miles, and 3rd @ 19,000.

I would open the valve from time to time. the last time i checked and it drained oil was around 12k. when I changed oil at 14k the can was near dry. In the last 30+k miles it's been dry. So the rings fully seated between 12k and 14k miles.

The more pure a synthetic oil is during a new engines ring seating process the longer the rings will take to seat, if not at all, especially if insufficient cylinder isn't built up during that time. I witness this on an engine dyno when a freshly built engine was run on a synthetic instead of a mineral oil.

If you're burning oil then that means you still have oil, so it's really no big deal. You should only be concerned if you are not burning oil.

    Same goes for leaking oil...

Of course they recommend their own additive...it makes them more money. People are nothing but sheep.

Be thankful he didn't put a steel zip tie on your drives shaft. Then you spend the next 80 hours looking for what is making that noise

I noticed the same starting in the late 90's when it seemed most people could no longer think for themselves, and had to be told what to do.

That really wasn't the point I was trying to make but there is some sense in using an additive in certain cases. If you're breaking in a flat tappet cam, it's a necessity. Oils have reduced ZDDP in recent decades to reduce catalyst poisoning.

No. When we were growing up, if you couldn't think you could die.
A 12 year old then is equivalent to a 35 year old now.

An an engine you built in your garage has zero in common with the engine in the Tacoma, except it burns gas and sparks.

We've always had stubborn yankees up here in new england that were pretty independent. Seemed nearly overnight this began to change. I use to say at that time people are behaving like cattle.

A 4 stroke ice is still the same principle having a crankshaft, camshaft, cylinder walls, pistons, and valves, just with more complication these days. They still require the same break in, as they ever have for optimum performance. There's no magic bullet.

Prior to meeting when we were in our mid-30s my wife and I lived a semi-nomadic life living and working all over the country and temporarily over seas as well; 20+ years ago we moved to New England when our kids were little (oldest in 3rd grade); any time folks would talk with any of us and quickly arrive at the conclusion "You're not from around here". :)
