I actually follow the severe interval to a tee. I just find it hilarious that some of the same people who get ravenous about changing oil with every other gasoline purchase will show up in the spark plug threads, shrug and say theirs are probably fine.

If you're going to subscribe to the severe interval, then commit all the way. :bananadead:

Well for what it's worth, I'll add my 2 cents in. I just returned from a visit to a friends shop this noon to see how he's been doing, plus grab a bite to eat. We got talking on the 3.5 tacomas and all the years this engine has been use in other toyota vehicles. From all he's documented in the last 15 years, or so with them. It really doesn't matter whether you change your oil at 3k, 5k, 7.5k, or 10k miles, these engines average 200k miles before they're spent. They are not the battleship the 2.7 is. I was surprised he told me a lot of those 3.5 engines started out with 5w30 oil. Thinks it was after 2010, they changed to 0w20.

Well… He’s not seeing the ones that are running just fine. My 2013 Sienna hasn’t seen a shop of any kind aside from recalls, and it won’t until something catastrophic happens. So what issues is he seeing at 200k?

Didn't ask, but he did advise me to sell my truck before then. I only mentioned what his take on this oil bs was, in which I was told whether 5k in a year, or 10k a year is what they recommend...not to exceed a year. He said from everything he's seen there's no benefit to change it any sooner unless a lot of towing.....same for all the drivetrain.

The reality is, I haven’t see many Toyota engines needing replaced due to oil consumption.
The majority are replace when the timing components fail, the head gaskets blow, or the frame rots out.

    You have 2 options.

Change it regularly and often and don’t have to worry about adding oil between changes.

Or, wait longer periods between changes and add oil.

I keep my truck on a constant IV of fresh oil. Non-stop fresh synthetic in the top while discharging the obviously ruined waste out of the bottom after a few engine revolutions. Anything less, you’re an idiot.

Change it regularly, every 10k with any brand of synthetic and you are good to go 500k miles on that motor easy

Not saying it happens often, but I have read more than a few threads of blown engines, head gasket issues, timing chain just snapping... that just to name a few. Again not saying it happens to all of us, but it does happen.

There are many already past 250 k
I think with good maintenance you can do 300 k after that if you think about it you got your money’s worth I think . Other stuff will go wrong and then you have a money pit.

I still haven't gotten an answer to my question.
What if you have not changed oil in 30k miles?
