Lol it’s like you have catastrophic failure immediately. I guess maybe that’s why have bad luck in life. How many cars did I ruin when I was a gas attendant at the local gas station when I was 18 years old and always topped it off to the nearest dollar. How many lives have I ruined?!?!?! But just kidding, sort of.

yes, that guy sounds smart. What's not taken into consideration is the fact that there is a cut-off valve, and the evap canister takes suction from the top of the tank. With where the fill tube comes into the tanks, there are still a decent margin before the tank is completely "full", thus no chance of liquid fuel from making it into the evap canister. I still don't think it's worth "topping off" the tank, not for the reasons he describes but just because it's not buying you very much.

I used to continue filling to the nearest dollar. Then the gas station I go to started giving a few cents off to people who bank where I do. I wasn't about to start doing math at the pump so I just fill until it kicks off now.

I saw a girl filling up at Costco till it started spilling out the filler neck. I finished filling up and got the hell out of there.

I goto Costco every week so I’ll always have the opportunity to fill up with fuel to spare so I just let the pump shut off and I’m off. Now for long road trips I’ll pump a bit extra, maybe 1/4 gallon at most, which is like 3 miles of additional range in the GX460.

I run the pump at its fastest fill setting. When it kicks off, I wait a few moments, then fully squeeze the pump nozzle handle until it shuts off again. Then I'm done.

This gives any fuel burbling up the fill neck during the first fill time to return to the tank. The 2nd time fills the remainder of the settled tank.

I've seen this around and always think the same thing. That warning is there BECAUSE of the previous generations actions.

Were they? One generation complaining that the next is somehow inferior is as old as time itself.
Did you consider that the previous generation by and large failed to perform the valve adjustment correctly, leading to premature failure, leading to newer generations making advances in technology not requiring adjustment?

Fair enough. I'm not necessarily defending the newer gens. There's incompetence everywhere and every age. As George Carlin said "think about how stupid the average person is, then realize half of them are stupider than that!"

I never top off my gas tank but often I slow down the nozzle for the last couple gallons just to avoid the burbling mentioned above. But when filling the 5-gallon gas jugs I will keep pumping until the level is maybe 1/2 inch below the vent cap. Doing this gets about 3/4 gallon more into each jug. Never had any spillage with an overfilled jug, guess I'm just lucky?

I don't think it is necessary to stop when the pump stops the 1st time. Depending on the vehicle I usually wait 5-10 seconds and put in a bit more gas until it stops the 2nd time. When you get gas coming back out of the filler neck you've gone too far.

In 45 years driving I’ve never had this happen. You probably almost have to force the nozzle trigger to full flow after it kicked off, you’re crazy if you do that but I guess some do. From the youtube channel for that video:

In my early car driving days, I would usually round up to the nearest whole dollar with no harm done, but I've seen where some people try to squeeze in another $5-$10.. and I'd imagine that's where the real problem lies.

I've been throwing an extra gallon in for the last 5 years on my 07 pre runner DCLB... 70k later at 190k now, she is running great still! Let it click, wait 5-10 seconds to settle then let it flow in there slowly till I get that extra gallon in
