Been watching off-road videos on youtube. Was impressed with how well a Tacoma prerunner is. Was going places 4x4's couldn't make it. Look it up. Rear lockers, long travel, tires. Will shut the mouth of many. I have an 09 with 325,000 miles on it. Will start this venture soon. Also have three other 4x4's. 90's pickups. The stock flex is already real impressed.

I was in the desert trails last weekend here in California for 3 days. I would say I saw about 15 tacos and with those probably 10 out of 15 were off road 2 wd, a couple 4 wd, and I drove my 2wd sport. My girl drove our 4x4 jeep. We hit up a ton of trails and camped. I went through a bunch of sand but no rock crawling as this was never my intention with this truck. In fact when I first bought it I never thought I was going to go off-road as much as I have been. It had now become an addiction of mine but still do about 90% city driving. I do have recovery gear and will usually go in groups. With that said, momentum, having the right tires, airing down, clearance and weight in the rear are my friends. And also like the auto LSD function in my truck if I'm stuck. No issues whatsoever. These are trucks and like you I bought what was appropriate for me. Oh and by the way, I found the nav on my tech package far for useful than having a 4 wd.

So I ran that same Procomp 3/1 kit with wheels and 285/70/17 Falken tires for the first 8 months of owning my truck and was completely fine with that setup. I did however crave more and installed my OME BP-51 setup which I am even more happy with. I do like to take my truck in for realignment after every few months especially after hitting trails. Firestone lifetime alignment is my friend. I say try the leveling kit first and see if you like it. The parts for that only cost me under $400 and I do all my suspension installations. That setup might be just perfect for you both for driving and what the budget calls for.

Life is short and you never know how much time you have left. Buy and config the truck that makes you happy and don't listen to the trash talkers.

That being said I am one of those guys with 4wd that barely needs it. But the truck I have and its config makes me very happy.

On another note, we saw a 2wd 2016 Tacoma OR doing things in Moab that really surprised us. That truck will surprise you off road, if you have not already experienced it.

OP, I commend you. I also recently purchased a 2WD OR and love it. I came off a Nismo Frontier that I bought new 12 years ago. That was 2WD, as well. I liked the look and features that came with the off road packages. Do what YOU want and enjoy YOUR truck!!

Am I the only one that is still stuck on the fact that they make a 2WD OR? I didn't even know such a thing existed.... good stuff.

    Like, so many.
Easy tiger, I was going to ask the same thing. Why not go with the Sport if you don't want 4WD? I'm of the opinion that the OR should only be 4WD,

    ^ HA.

I know your question is for the OP. I looked at both. The OR just looks way cooler than the sport, in my opinion.

Does the 2wd OR still have all the crawl control tech? Never thought about it until this thread.

Make it look bitchy!! Show it off! Show some a$$ and some lower back! Show us pictures!!!

I drive a 4x4 taco for work on the beach. That’s where a real 4x4 comes in. I can do damage that way without paying for the maintenance. No one here is a real 4x4 guru... there is no guru. We are all materialistic people and want nice things to look damn sexy. Go off road with your off road and make it look majestic! Show us some pictures!

I have a 2wd taco for commutes. I like the way it drives, feels, and looks.
