Came looking for feedback on the new Tacoma, was considering trading in my 14 for the new body style hoping they'd improved the seats. Appears they're still terrible, guess I keep it.
I know this is a Tacoma forum, and I've owned one going back to 04 but I wish VW would bring their small truck to North America. The Germans know how to build a quality car, with comfortable seats.

The most expensive mod I would consider on my truck is replacing the seats. They are absolutely terrible, and not just due to lack of adjustment. I cannot figure out why Toyota went so super cheap with these seats. Like, how expensive is a little memory foam etc?

When I get in my F150 that I drive for work my ass and lower back thank me, and my mind tries, again, to justify the cost of the Toyota.

Is there an aftermarket full seat replacement on the horizon?

Good to know about breaking in the seats, just got a 2020 limited, the power seats are stiff. My 2005 Access has more comfortable seats, but they have been broken in (353,016 miles).

The “Desert Does It” front seat jacker made a big difference for me. They make a rear seat lift, too.

I replaced the seats in my 2004 with Recaro Expert M seats four years ago. Yes, it cost me to $4K to purchase them & have them installed professionally, but it's been worth every penny in terms of comfort.

I ordered a 2020 Tacoma AC MT and am awaiting delivery. Even though the driver seat on the 2020s is very comfortable, I'll miss the Recaros when I decide to sell my 2004.

Su.brat, when you had your seats updated at the upholstery shop, what did they do? cut away the hard firm foam and add some softer foam? I am thinking of having this done, either as is or as I add some Katskin leather covers.

    - Seat contour:
stock driver seat was the most uncomfortable seat ever. within an hour of driving my right thigh would go totally numb and stay that way the whole drive. and my mid-upper back hurt from it also. so i went to Jay's Upholstery in Denton, TX and asked them to bucket it. $200 for the most comfortable seat i own now.
Passenger side, not touched, flat and quite hard:

Driver side, bucketed and cushioned. in this pic you can't see much but the driver foam is very soft on top and lets you sink right into it. they carve out the bucket to drop your bottom, raise the thighs a bit, then there will be some slack in the leather. they carve foam from the bottom, not the top. after that they fill the top with low density foam to take up the slack. so what you're looking at is kinda puffy on the top but you sink into the bucket easily. so comfortable and snug.

Man I need to find a shop that can do this in the Baton Rouge area. I'm not sure if something in the seat collapsed or wore out but the driver seat is unbearable to drive in for more than 20 minutes at a time now. I have to sit on a cushion to drive to my camp on the weekends. Problem is my head is already skimming the top...so with the seat cushion adding some more height it makes me lean to the right and have my head in the sun roof area but then my back and neck hurts from the 2 hours of leaning to the right...

sounds like the right plan for you. upholstery shops on occasion have someone who have done it but experience may be tricky to find. just be sure they carve from the bottom and go gradually. for me this particular change was probably the most important mod of all to keep from selling the truck when it was new. this was about the first thing i did back in early 2017 and after that i felt good to throw everything at the truck.

Yes the seats suck, I’m 6’2 and slim, my back kills me on long rides, feels like there’s lumps in the cushion but that’s my bones against the hard foam, feels like I’m sitting on plywood, tried several cushions but found nothing works and upholstery shops here are ridiculously expensive, so living with it for now….

i got mine custom contoured and puffed back with low density foam on top, like 4 hours of work, for $200. honestly if that's too much i bet you can do this yourself if you take your time.

Got a quote at a local shop and they wanted $300 to just replace the factory foam. I asked if they could do some additional cushion and he said yeah but it would be extra... lol.

I was going to just order and replace it myself but i dont think doing that will help much.

I'll just live with it and sit on the cushion I got for long rides i guess...
