I recently just bought a new 2018 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 OR. I started to notice that when I make a turn and go slow it makes a clacking noise toward the front of the vehicle (tie rods?) And I was wondering if something like this is 100% normal or if I should get it checked out by the dealer (assuming it’s free, since I just got it 3 weeks ago.) and I have not been doing any off roading (yet) like the average “taco” consumer. Thank you.

Make sure you are in 2 wheel drive and not 4 wheel drive, before you take it to the dealership, or on the way to the dealership.

    Definately take it in regardless.

Sometimes people get the knobs confused.

Idk, I might leave it on because the truck will be climbing over the other vehicles in the lot to show my agony.

Not sure the purpose of this post, your warranty has just begun lol. But in regards to what the noise is coming from i'd try to have someone else stand outside while you're turning to see if they can pinpoint.

Sorry, to clear it up I just was wondering if it was smart to get it checked out or if it was normal to experience this.

No, I don’t even have to touch the brake pedal. It’s when it accelerates or at a steady pace.

It's possible that the rear differential is low of lube.

2016 Tacoma here. I had this problem since the day I bought my truck. It happens I when you take turns, usually onto a drive way ramp and happens whether I turn left or right. It's like a
TRRRK....TRRKKKK sound, like gears grinding. I've taken my truck to the dealership more than 2 occasions about this, and they agree the problem exists, grease whatever they think the issue is, but always comes back after a while... I've given up taking it to them, and now just live with it. No lift or anything.

Wow. You have it on 4wd ? That's the problem . Only use 4wd on the trails not on concrete.

My old F-150 did something similar, It was the wheel bearing from the side it ticked. Not saying that’s what your problem is, just food for thought. Either way take it to the dealership and report back their findings, could help other members :hattip:

I once had a 2007 Tacoma that also made a noise similar to what you describe, it had a limited slip differential. I drained all the fluid and replaced it and added a few ounces of limited slip additive . I drove it in an empty parking lot in a figure 8 a few times and never heard the noise again. It might be worth a try .

So just went into Toyota to check it out and it made the noise much less noticeable. I hear it very faintly but what they did was lubricated the steering stops. Hope this helps someone.

That worked on your 07 because you had an actual mechanical limited slip rear, today it is brake operated limited slip.

I still haven't taken mine to the dealer, when I called to make an appointment they had nothing that fit my schedule this week. Will probably take it next week. I heard the noise again today though. Where are steering stops located? Taking a wild guess, it sounds like my clank/grind noise is coming from the undercarriage area about 2-3' in front the steering wheel and around the drivers side engine/frame area.

I don’t know where it is located but I’m about to take mine in again as well because the noise is still prominent.
