i'm trying to choose between a new $31.5k OTD 2019 SR5 V6 access cab and a used $22k (around 25k OTD?) 2017 SR5 V6 access cab with 55k miles. which one should i go with? so i'll save around $6k but it is 55k miles on a 2 year old truck afterall. i love saving money but if it is just plain out not worth it then i may consider otherwise.

also to note there are no 0% offers for new tacomas in my area, only 3.9/72 and the dealer (chevrolet) for the used tacoma says 3.5/60 is easily doable

I'm assuming the used one has no warranty included. That can increase your cost especially if you're considering keeping it long term.

Honestly its about what you can afford. I'd suggest getting preapproval for credit from a bank so the dealer can't pad some points.

I'd say new in this limited scenario - however, additionally - if you have the offer sheet in hand (if not take a photo with your phone) I'd shop it with dealers within an hours drive (or so) - tell them that is what you are doing. Cars depreciate with time, so you are not in a rush - this is not a once in a lifetime deal. I'd check with local bank - or CU if you have one or wait for a 0%, you can tell the salesman to call you when they run a promo on financing. Good luck!

How long do you normally keep vehicles?

$6k off equates to about 19% of the value. You'd have to drive the truck until 275k miles for you to translate the 55k miles to 19% of the projected life or depreciation. You won't spend 6k in maintenance or repair in the first 55k so the savings is in the used truck if you can get comparable financing terms.

In either case I'd make sure the financing terms are tight and not added to with fluff charges after the fact. The finance guy is the one you have to worry about. The sales guy is just there to get you to the finance guy. In either event, securing financing from a trusted third party is the best course of action and then weigh the options. (i.e. is he going to talk you into gap coverage, tire puncture protection or hide a $785 charge for what have you) Is the 55k miles of "worry free" driving worth 6k? Is there something you like better about one or the other? This isn't a problematic sports car, so I wouldn't think you'd be high risk.

this will be my first ever car that wasn't handed down to me and i do plan on driving this into the ground. they are also identical trucks from what i can tell, down to even having the same black alloy rims.

I will only add that I would suggest not doing 72 month financing. Ever.

    Is that 4x4?

I paid 29.5k before taxes for a double cab sr5 with the premium entune, parking sensors etc.

You can surely get the price lower on an access cab sr5

Then by ALL means enjoy a NEW truck! The price difference is not that much and the enjoyment of a new, never owned vehicle will be great.

both are 2wd. 31.5k OTD would make it about 28k before taxes. i do wish to negotiate some more when i go there in person though lol

What is your budget? I’ve had very good success buying used Toyotas, they last a very long time. Another way to look at it is do you want a truck with a bunch of nanny minder features or a more basic one with less to go wrong in the long run? I am so glad I bought a 2017!

And most importantly, you will have more money for mods if you get the 2017! :bananadance:

Note that there is a significant refresh coming for the 2020 model year. If you are not in a hurry . . .

As an ex service advisor I strongly suggest buying CPO from a Toyota dealership.

Do NOT purchase from the Chevy dealership. Once the truck is in your hands you will be a no-body to them. I promise you that.
