The manual has 4.30s so it is much more "torquey" so to speak. Easier to get moving. You pay for that with a few mpg, however. I've been able to get 21-22mpg combined. Sometimes I'm easy with it, sometimes I'm revving it out. Blackbeard is right, the engine switches to Otto cycle after 3k rpm which not only feels great, it sounds awesome. Like Honda's vtec but manlier. Hope this helps

Sold: '19 TRD OR - It will always be in my heart.
I read in another thread that the 3rd gen was not keeping it's value as well as everyone thought. Do you mind sharing what % depreciation you got on your '18?

I found 2500-3000 to be the best to drive in. Below that was sluggish. Above 3 was definitely responsive but I wasn't a fan of keeping the rpms that high for practical driving. Slowly driving through parking lots was a pain. 2nd was lugging and 1st was a little too torquey lol.
Not at all. Purchased for 32, traded for 26. 34k miles and just about exactly 2 years.

Not at all, plenty of power in lower rpms with normal driving. Im happy with the power, she never let me down.

Just to counter all the positives already mentioned — Certain low speed operations are worse - reversing up a hill, rock crawling, or hauling a heavy load up a boat ramp for instance. Without the torque converter to rev up the motor quickly, you can really feel the lack of low-rpm torque. Once you’re going above 2k it’s peppy though. Never really leave 6th gear on the highway unless i’m heavily loaded or doing some serious mountain passes

Is the torque converter an after marker add on? If yes, any further details appreciated.

I think he is referring to how an auto has a torque converter and manual doesn't.

Right thanks. The TC in a MT comes in the form of a foot/stick combo. :)

I came from driving a 93 landcruiser on 35s, my taco feels like a sportscar love shifting thru the gears.

Sure — but it can only go so far before you smoke it — see parallel parking, reverse, loaded, in Seattle. Bye bye clutch.

24 years old with an auto. Rather have an MT in my S2K, Motorcycles etc. over this truck.

And I much rather my kids can shoot a gun, treat a woman right, learn how to provide for themselves over learning how to drive stick. That just sounds silly, as if driving a stick is a personality trait.

I only own 1 truck... I wanted to enjoy every time I drove my truck and that’s why I bought MT... I’ve had a 16 2.7 AUTO and it was fine, but boring....

OP should do what makes him happier... on my case, manual trans....

I don’t find this manual fun to drive at all. It’s a chore like the old ranger I used to drive.

I think if you’re a die hard MT person you’ll be fine in an MT Tacoma but it’s not my thing in comparison to S drive and ECT on. I think that’s actually a hoot to drive as it actually shifts fairly quickly and isn’t like driving a dump truck

Yeah, I can't comment on the other two scenarios, but reversing up a hill with the MT takes some getting used to. The reverse gearing is just wrong. I reverse up my driveway into the garage and it requires some delicate clutch work.

This is why I've spent the last 25 years wearing out my left knee. But I did make my point and Autos used to only have 4 gears and no manual control. Glad I still have a weekend Toy to prove I'm active and not Obese.

I guess their thinking was, if all your forward gears brake, you can still get home in no time in reverse.

My 2007 ranger was like driving a tractor compared to my taco. I was amazed at how smooth the tranny is when i test drove my taco. Which year was your ranger ?

Haha! I bet man, German MTs are known to be super smooth. I had a 91 civic SI with MT, thats as close as i came to that. What a fun little car that was, inderstructable.

Had 87 camaro MT and 1990 mazda b2200 MT as well, all drove like tractors pretty much. I do enjoy this 3rd gen taco tranny a lot though, i wish the throttle response was better for revmatching and the stupid reverse gear was lower ( im waiting on 2LO mod) but all in all i love it. After 2 years, i still grin everytime i get behind the wheel :D
