New 2020 head unit. Buying?

Good advice. Wasn't planning on doing the head unit or engine mod, just using it for point of reference. 10 payments would be a lot to ask from 5k for a lot of people with 3rd gens out here.

 

I could afford over $500 a month for a vehicle payment, but would never agree to that. I'd never be able to justify being committed to that high of a payment. My head spins when I see guys and gals paying $700-800 a month as a minimum payment on a tacoma

 

For sure I think people focus on the monthly payment value too much and fall victim to the dealership games. I would rather have $1,000/month for 36 months than $500/month for 72 with interest rates and all kinds of stuff. That is of course unless I had an almost zero interest loan and was freeing up the cash for other investments.

 

I hear ya. For me it was the entire loan, all factors important. From monthly payment, overall cost, and interest rate. I always like to play things safely and go with the longest loan term that still has a low interest rate. I got a rate I was happy with, and was consistent whether a 36 month or 72 month term. I'd rather have the longer term because I'm not obligated to pay as much if god forbid something happens and I'm out of work for an extended period of time, or other emergency costs come up. In the meantime however, I throw extra principal on top every month paying the loan down faster. I'm almost at my first year in the loan, and at the rate I'm going I'll have my 72 month loan paid off in under 48.

To keep it somewhat still on topic, the impulsive side of me wants to trade my 19 in for a 20 but the financial responsible side says hell no. To add heated leather seats, new head unit, and remote start to my current truck, or trade in and have them as oem options....

Im with you on the flexibility of payments too. I think I saw you post on other topics that you basically building a Pro clone with OEM components so that adds to the hassle of you switching out and honestly thought of that too because I loved the cement color but wanted the added safety features 2018+. For me the hang ups I have is that I'd probably take a bath switching from a 2018 Pro to a 2020 Pro with arguable not earth shattering changes. It might be close to a wash if I went from the pro to a 2020 OR but to be honest would likely only make the switch for the AG Pro with MT. The other part is that a huge reason of why I got the 18 was because no sunroof so I got the extra headroom because I'm 6'3"+. If the power seats can make it go lower we might be in business, if not the whole thing is moot. But yeah to recap mods that I like head unit, power seat, and maybe headlights TBD. However, at this point I might just wait and jump at the last year with an MT if they decide to cancel it. The only bummer is that the AG will probably be a one and done kind of thing so may miss out, it's kind of a gamble.

 

I'd be impressed if there was a high number of people doing this, or even qualify for this. But hey, good for them if they can. What I imagine in actuality, people putting little to zero down at signing with a high interest rate that kills them. I know a few whom don't even have bad credit, but just didn't know any better and took on a bad loan and are upside town on their Tacomas, which is impressive considering how much these trucks retain their value.

Yeah that's the other part of the coin. At the time when I got my truck, it made (some) sense money wise to go the OR route instead of a PRO. I got my truck for under $34k whereas all the PROs in my area were in the $48k ballpark, and minus the hood and leather I've basically got a PRO without even coming close to the $40k mark. I've kept all the stock components for my truck, so that would be a long weekend or two venture to put everything back to stock (suspension, skid plate(s), exhaust, air box, lighting, etc.). I'm not even sure what model I'd get if I went to a 2020. It'd either be a PRO and I'd have to resell all the extras from my current truck, or a long bed OR and throw the stuff on that.

As far as the power seat goes, I had the same concerns since I'm 6'1". I made sure I got my truck without a sunroof as well for the extra head room (I have no idea why the headliner needs to be dropped so much for the sunroof in the first place, but that's an entirely different discussion...). Recently stopped at my local dealership to check out a 2020 PRO, in MGM and looked sharp, and was disappointed with the power height adjustment. It did give a little bit better clearance for head room, but not as much as I have now without the sunroof. So with you being 6'3" I'm sure you'd feel the same way if not even more slightly uncomfortable.

I bet they'll have Army Green as a standard option on all the trucks for 2021. I'd wait until toyota announces the 2021s and see if they keep the manual option or axe it altogether, if so maybe go for an OR at that point? I'd hope they'd keep for the rest of the 3rd gen at least before the 4th gen debuts.

I might sound kinda ridiculous as a case for the stock 2020 head unit over an aftermarket, but I like that it's backed by the factory warranty and is literally designed to work with/for the truck. I could definitely go the aftermarket route and add cameras and remote start, but I fear it'll never be as seamlessly integrated as stock. I'll have to decided whether or not I want to deal with all the troubles in either direction and if the costs are worth it.

 

A weekend or two might be worth it for a good deal or if you could sell it private party to someone who sees value in what you've done even better. Sad to say, but 48k would be a STEAL where I am, they usually hover in the mid 50's MSRP so by the time everything is tacked out you're at 60k practically.

Thats a shame about the seats. I thought maybe with more incremental position options and it lowering it might be better. I haven't tried it because even it's drastically improved that's one less reason not to trade it in. I don't think they would axe the manual before the current cycle is done and depending on what engine technology they decide to go with they might keep the manual because it keeps it more competitive with Jeep and them still offering one.

Not to be a hater the MGM looks good but then it looks like a guy who bought badges on ebay and slapped them on. At least with the AG you know its a pro.

The head unit thing would be sweet but everything on this feed shows how crazy it would be to do and the ROI on it. Even the lights at 1,200 would be a lot but you could justify it with safety upgrade or something. What does your current setup look like?

 

Yeah I have no doubt I'd be able to resell the parts, either on here or on facebook tacoma groups. It's all OEM PRO parts that I got for well under retail costs, and I feel the demand is definitely there for the grill, fogs, skid, suspension, etc. If I were to ever trade in, it would probably come down to what they offer me for my truck as a stock OR. I've had it since feb '19 and own about $22k on it. If they offered $30k or even more, I'd certainly be tempted more.

Agreed on the manual option, and what you said about the MGM's. I did slap the cheap chinese pro "style" TRD OR badges on, for literally a day and ended up taking them off my truck. Ended up going with some custom pro style badges where the OR font is color matched to the barcelona red from @sting ray's website. I'm not one for upbadging at all, and still want to designate it as an OR, not a PRO. Removed the rest of the factory badging and bed decals and put blacked out badging on the tailgate including the black TRD OR from the 4Runner.

Most recently just added the morimoto headlights. Whether I go 2020 or not, I'm keeping these headlights for sure as they just perform better than anything else out of the box.

 

That's a clean setup and you took the time to make it what makes a pro a pro. As opposed to people who just slap it on there with the same suspension, fog lights etc. That quest is why the hood swappping feed has blown up. Those headlights are clean, just haven't found something I like enough yet to make me give up the Pro headlights yet.

The head unit in my 2020 is NOTHING to write home about. I sincerely hope that there are better options out there, because I will be changing mine out.

Sales literature and Owner's Manual claimed it comes with HD Radio (which was a plus for me). My model evidently does not have an HD Radio tuner. Manual indicates I should have offline GPS mapping through an app, that's not the case either.

The Entune Apps part is totally non-functional, the dealer has tried twice to get things working and so far, no joy. AA and Carplay both seem to work, but using maps that way requires data. I don't always have cell service where I am going so the maps are just a blank screen, which is not so helpful.

 

Bizarre. Sorry to hear about your troubles. What model Tacoma did you end up getting?

 

I have a Pioneer head unit.

 

It is a 2020 TRD OR DC SB. Super happy with everything else, but the stereo is just a mess.

My dealer's working with me, we haven't given up yet, but there is ZERO support from Toyota corporate. When I go to https://www.toyota.com/audio-multimedia/#!select-model/tacoma/2020, I get the following:

"Our Apologies

Your selections that have been entered do not return any results. Please make sure all the information has been entered correctly, or contact Toyota for support."

Thought I was contacting Toyota for support??

 

That sucks. At least the dealer is trying to help out and give support. I doubt corporate is really going to get involved, sadly to say. And that website just looks like it doesn't work period and needs to be fixed itself.

Hope you get your issues resolved! Did you get the multi terrain cameras? If so, are those working with the head unit?

 

Same problem here. 2020 TRD OR DCSB. I *did* get in touch with Toyota tech support, and they told me that the apps on the head unit have been removed on the 2020 because it has Carplay and Android Auto, and you need to use the apps on your phone. Yes, it's apparently true. You cannot download any Entune apps on this head unit. You're stuck with what's on it from the factory. There's a possibility that they can change this with a firmware update if there's enough customer backlash, so please do file a complaint like I did. It's absolutely ridiculous to A) REMOVE functionality in a new vehicle that previous model years had, and B) Assume that all of your customers own smartphones. Pathetic.

You asked for it, you got it! Toyota!

I'd be happy to call/email/whatever it takes to talk to a real person and let them know I feel like I got ripped off by false advertising and misleading claims. I have sent emails and left messages, but so far, I have received no response back from Toyota.

Fundamentally - adding another $500 or so for the navigation would have been a non-issue for me price-wise. I was told I did not need it and agreed to buy the truck I did.

Fortunately, my dealer has indicated that they'll make this right, we're still working on those details though.
