Why does Toyota service suck so much? How do they have this legendary reputation, when any issue found with the truck is just “eh, they’re like that” like, wtf?

Almost every issue I’ve had on my taco would not have flown on the fords i used to work on. And they sure as hell would have fixed trash in the paint, or a screaming differential ffs

using rubbing alcohol below the doors, the cabs frame quarter panel?, the other day to clean it of oil/grease to stick on leds and I found that it removed some white paint. The paint felt sticky like it was uncured, rubbing alcohol takes off paint?

It /shouldn’t/ - alcohol’s what ford supplies to clean with any thing made to be adhered to painted panels - such as wind visors

Since you already have blemishes in your paint, pick up a set of blemished wheels from SCS thread.

I had my cab Opti-Coat Pro, I guess they didn't do the paint under the cabs lower under panel, I may hit it since I have left over CSL and EVO v4.

thanks for your thinking which turned into some advice

They made a reputation, and now they are coasting off of it.

Many of the techs dont take pride in what they do, so it results in subpar dealership work, they dont treat customer cars like they would treat their own. They get careless, they half ass things, or they just guess. Plus if you need warranty repair, you have no choice but to go to the dealer. Its a captive market, and your forced to go with them many times. So many companies force you to only do work with them after you have a product, there are no other options due to parts chains.

Im a big fan of right to repair, and any company that will let me do the warranty work on my own. Dell (not sure if they still do) would mail you the parts you needed to repair your computer, then you mail back the old parts. It was great to not have to deal with their "hired" techs. Uniden mailed me the parts needed to fix my CB radio, that was great that I didnt have to mail in the whole thing, wait awhile, then get it back and it maybe broken worse.

I wouldn't expect any more from a vehicle built in a third world country, it will only get worse. Toyota has fallen a long way in quality from made in Japan down to Mexico, you get what you pay for. Same for those noisy Thailand made rear axles.

The fact that you pointed out the paint blemish and took photos with the salesperson during the pre-buy inspection will not gain you anything unless you had an agreement in writing that the dealer will fix the issue. Unfortunately you loose all leverage once you sign the papers and take ownership, unless it is an item included in the warranty of course.

It is clear from the photos that you received the truck like this and didn’t do anything to cause the defect under the paint. This is totally different than the scenarios others are mentioning about chipped paint where it isn’t clear who caused the problem.

My guess is that there was minor transport damage & was locally resprayed. I think I've heard those are called fisheyes in the auto body world. I've had them on 2 cars that were repainted.

If you don’t mind waiting, Toyota has released a customer service campaign addressing the issues with their Blizzard Pearl and Super White vehicles. Supposedly they are working on a solution but it’s gonna be a while.

my 4R is blizzard pearl and my taco is super white haha.

Thats the problem?! oh, yeah.. I had that from day one, for sure. Sucks, man. Get the paint sealed and protected for future abuse. Cant see toyota respraying the truck. You should see the pinstripping and rock chips on my truck, currently

Just an update, the dealer has offered to have a mobile paint guy do the repairs on the truck, they also offered a rental car. I’m a bit apprehensive though and worried this will open a can of worms. Typically these guys do quick spot repairs on used cars but likely new cars damaged on the lot also, heck I might already have some of his work on my truck and not know it. But if I go this route I doubt Toyota would officially warranty it, not sure. It would be done at the dealer so I assume there would be a paper trail. I think these mobile guys only really do base coat/clear coat type repairs so will there be spots of clear coat on my panels? I’m not sure, but my super white paint in single stage, no separate clear coat.

There’s another dealer close to me with their own Toyota certified body shop. I’m tempted to go by there and get an opinion but that’s not where I purchased the truck so they might not be helpful.

The repair they will do probably wont involve much painting. Im betting they will wet sand the spots flat, then buff them out.

I would talk to the person who will be doing the work and find out exactly what they plan to do.

Toyota contracts the painting out to Earl Scheib. that way, they only pay $49.95

Not a good option...period. Been messing with have paint work one for over 60 years. For sure I'd never trust a mobile paint repair. If you really need the paint work done, have it done by a reputable high end body shop...and I'll bet the body shop folks would recommend leaving it as is.

As far as just wetsanding and buffing. Not a good idea either. Someone at the factory tried this on one of the debris pieces in my white Tacoma's paint. The debris is gone, the surface is flat, but now I have a tiny primer spot showing through. Yes...for sure this was a factory repair. You may try one spot in an inconspicuous to see for yourself.

What he said. Ask more questions on how it will be repaired. Talk to the guy who is actually going to perform the work if you can. The small town dealer here actually has body shop attached to the service dept.

there’s a dude in my town that does mobile paint repair for minor cosmetics. He does better work then several “reputable” body shops I’ve been too. So I really think it depends. The guy takes pride in his work and dies a good job. So it’s possible to find a mobile repair who does good work.
