New 2021 Tacoma - Need Rust Prevention Advice

I know someone that used known, he swore never to use it again a waste of money. Said he could of got the same result with used motor oil.

 

Woah ya. I mean high cost of living and a high electricity bill in summer is a draw back living in CA. But from what I am hearing about the rust thing , I don't know if I could deal with that. I love my vehicles, working on them, maintaining them, wouldn't want them to disintegrate.

OK before I move there, I propose the following:

Add up the cost of salting the roads, the billions in damage and repair costs, and environmental cost. Take this money and put it in a fund that will retrofit all the roads to heat up via coils in the road. Obviously new cost effective materials need to be invented for road construction so they don't have to be dug up and re-poured year after year. Something that can last decades with the heating coils imbedded in them and also never form pot holes. To heat the coils maybe geothermal or solar? Humm, actually this is all sounding quite costly. Ok. No more road ways. Just high speed rail to move people and freight underground. Ahh damn, also quite costly...dang it... maybe just salt the roads then?

 

After you spray oil all over the underside of your truck, it mixes with dirt and forms a horrible greasy, grimey mess that gets all over you every time you touch anything under the truck.

But don't worry you'll get used to it. And it does seem to repel rodents that like to nest in your air filter housing and chew on your wires.

 

You’ve really got a hate on for Krown lol, always seems like you’ve got a “buddy” who hates it for one reason or another. It’s a well established product with a pretty good track record where I’m from.

 

Has anyone tried power washing their truck weekly to prevent any rust?

Used motor oil contains contaminants such as arsenic, cadmium, benzene, lead, magnesium and zinc. If the oil is improperly disposed of, these contaminants can leak into the ground and wreak havoc. They can damage the soil in which crops are grown, contaminating the food chain. The oil could eventually even make its way into waterways, contaminating them as well.

 

I'm old enough to remember when it was normal to dispose of used oil by dumping it into a shallow hole in the yard.

I have heard of people using chainsaw bar and chain oil as undercoating because it has something in it to make it sticky. When you run a chainsaw, you're basically spraying the stuff all over the woods.

 

Just cause we used to do it, doesnt make it right. Not sure what you are getting at here?

I do agree its kind of silly to say using used motor oil on the bottom of the car is going to hurt the environment, its no different than having a car with a slight oil leak...

 

I'm not trying to offend anyone, but krown just doesn't work well in our state. We get too much heavy rain and deep puddles across local roads. Even fluid film tends to get washed off as the winter wears on. I'm trying something different like cosmoline this time, as not to keep reapplying it every year. So far this stuff looks like a winner.

 

Problem is car wash's use recycled water which i've always wondered how much road salt products are in it when you use it. Not everyone wants to wash their vehicle in the middle of a sub freezing cold spell, or has a big heated garage to do it in. I'm lucky if i get a warm enough day once a month to wash the truck.

 

I wash my truck 3+ times a week in the winter time. If there is any salt spray on the sides of the truck, it goes to the car wash. I also fluid film the hell out of the truck in the fall, mid winter and spring (spring salt run off from melting snow is bad)

 

And that's not good. Clean the truck good top and bottom. Use your favorite paint protection above and fluid film, woolwax, cosmiline, or whatever you like under. Once the salt and snow comes DO NOT WASH your truck. Wait until spring. Unless you get a nice day and can wash by hand above only. Never use a car wash especially during the winter. You are getting recycled water with trace amounts of salt and chemicals and the pressure forces whats on your truck and whats in the water into every crack and crevice on your vehicle. A had a 2005 Tacoma black that for 10 years was parked outside and never washed once in the winter and it looked like a 1 year old truck when I traded it in. Stop over thinking people.

 

They dont used recycled water by me so its ok. Fluid film has been packed into every crack and crevice already, so no water does anything in there.


EDIT: also I would argue that diluted salt residue on the truck is much safer than full strength salt residue on the truck.

 

Watch from ~13:10 where used motor oil with all the contaminants can actually be worse than the control with no protection... Heck, if you want to use motor oil why not buy a 5 quart jug of low cost straight 30w ?

Thats good to hear. The majority of my toyota compact 4x4 pickups back in the day had serious rust issues after 5 years with not much done to them as far as rust protection. I'm lucky to wash my vehicles twice during the winter, never used a car wash on the tundra, and still don't plan to on the tacoma. My 01 tundra had no rust anywhere on the body, and the paint was still good. Except for some touchups from rock chips it still could of passed for a much newer truck, yet being 19 years old.

 

Like a jug of 30w bar oil at walmart.

 

i was born and raised in SE PA and the rust was bad from the salt but also sprayed down my vehicles regularly and sprayed alot of the under carriage with used oil and no issues...always used undercoating with no problems..

 

I'm new to this forum so very late to this conversation. I used FF on my new '20 TRD Sport. My previous Taco was a 2006 and came with the dealer applied undercoating. It took 14 years of NWNJ winters to destroy that frame.

 

For what its worth, i keep reading, and hearing how toyota has taken care of their past frame issues for 2020, and newer by adding much more their own rust protection. Idk, but if they called using a heavier coat of black plaint to their frames, i'm not buying it. I noticed a spot or two on my 2020 frame welds last summer that had some surface rust starting. I ended up taking it upon myself to spray down the chassis with cosmoline for pom. Rust is terrible here in connecticut.

 

Anybody remember Rusty Jones under coating from the1980's that was light brown and like a soft wax ? When I got rid of my 1982 Subaru in 1991 it was still looking good underneath and that is something for a Subaru of that era.
