Sounds like the same stuff my brother has on his 77 trans am, but supposedly it was done by ziebart at the time using a new type of coating instead of their usual black goop.

Fluid Film here. Local place does it for $140, which is an easy sell to me so I don’t have to bathe in it. Zero rust or hint of rust in SEPA so far.

I also keep a couple personal spray bottles for battery terminals, hood latch, and other areas they might have missed.

I've been using crc marine heavy corrosion inhibitor.on my 2019 off road..I srayed up underneath the last two years with this stuff..I dont know that I will have to do it again..its very similar to cosmolin...you have to use a mask when spraying it..it will give me a headache quickly...but it drys a waxy coating that dosnt wash off...I dont have any rust here in Central Illinois...I can only say good things about it...ive used fluid film in the past..but IMO this is better..this srays on wet, creeping into pockets..drys and leaved a layer of wax that is softish..you can put your finger nail into it..so ot won't wash off or crack and hold moisture

How many cans did it take you for your truck? I'm picking up a DCLB tomorrow and am looking at using this spray.

This stuff is great if you want a durable coating that dries enough that it's not tacky and dirt doesn't stick like it does with oily films. I wish it was available in qt/gallon containers so I could spray it on with a pressure sprayer but according to CRC it is only available in aerosol cans. They do offer some other corrosion inhibitors in larger containers but they wouldn't respond to my question and if it was the same thing as the "heavy duty corrosion inhibitor" from CRC Marine.

I did a very thorough job..took off drain plugs in my doors and shot some chain oil in there..it wasn't cheap...8 cans should do it...if you have any left over hit it again..they recommend a second coat after 12 hoirs..I waited till the following fall..but its there..my frame feels like a candle stick...its definitely stayed on..and..the cans don't come with straws..so I used a old fluid film nosel and straw

Any oil suspended in air is bad stuff to breathe. Lungs don't tend to like it.

Drive a beater in the winter when they salt has always been my answer.

Been saying the same for cosmoline rp-342 that it appears far longer lasting than fluid film. Same stuff bmw and mercedes use on their chassis for preventing rust. Real pita having to reapply fluid film every year.

I have a 1996 Tacoma that has lived its whole life in the midwest. Previous owners did Rust Check and rust was minimal. I kept it up until one year I was really busy and now I have rust showing through my rear fenders. Shame on me for not doing what I was supposed to.

My last application was 4 cans of this stuff in the fall, combed thru the underbody, sanded down some small rust spots, sprayed a rust preventer/converter, then Roll Bar Spray. Let it dry a few hours and gave it all a nice coat of CRC marine inhibitor. For a 2017 in the midwest-salt belt and as my daily driver it has very very minimal rust if any at all. In the spring, i usually get under there and reapply FF or CRC. Twice a year applications helps keep it looking new

Edit: Now that i think of it, comparing FF and CRC marine inhibitor, my opinion is the CRC provides a better protection on the larger areas of the frame that are accessible, but FF does a much much better job of creeping to the smaller harder to reach areas. If you really want to be anal about it, FF the smaller areas, use CRC on the main frame and enjoy the truck!

Lease a new one every 3-4 years and don’t worry about it.

Ehhh I've leased before, never again. Esp with a truck that depreciates so well, it makes more sense to buy. I'm OCD anyways so i'd likely treat my lease just as well in case i decide to buy it

I have an appointment with my local known rustproof to do my taco this Saturday. I have 300 miles on it and I'm not waiting. I've seen what Michigan winters do to our vehicles. $149 per year is cheap in my opinion. I'll clean my seals and silicone them after a few weeks. I plan to keep this truck for a long time so I'm going the known route, they told me the do inside the frame rails, that sold me right there.

Get yourself a 6 pac of cosmoline, or crc, a hazmat coverall suit, goggles plus a 6 pac of your favorite beer, and make an afternoon of it.

    Thread Resurrection!

Couple things: All the stuff zoo mentioned would cost at least 100 bucks and it's worth the extra 50 for me to have somebody else get covered in oil! Also, you can't tell me I could do a more thorough job than the Krown shop. I've taken my truck in twice now and they spend an hour hitting every inch of the undercarriage, inside panels, etc.

If you prefer to do it yourself I have no problem with that. Maybe you've got the time, tools, and know-how? I documented my first trip in this same thread a year ago(post#79) and here's some pics from today.

Pro-tip: Leave some cardboard down where you park before you get it sprayed. Learned that lesson the hard way after my first visit!
