I just picked up my new Tacoma this week and have noticed the automatic shifter feels off. Not sure exactly how to describe it - stiff, clunky, imprecise? My last 3rd Gen Tacoma was a manual so I am not sure if this is normal or not for a new Taco. Definitely feels odd compared to the many other automatics I have driven.

Other than that question, loving the truck. Once I get it cleaned up and some minor mods installed, I will post up some pics.

If you’re talking about how clunky the shifter feels, it’s “normal”.

When you go through the gear ranges with the truck running , do the lights on the dash correspond to the gear you are in ?
The truck starts in park ,,,we know this . Will it also start in Neutral ?
When you go through the gear ranges with the truck shut off but the key in the on position ,is the shifter difficult to move ?

Need a better description of your issue to assist you in determining the problem

If the OP is just talking about the shifter movement itself...then yeah. It will be a bit stiff at first, and loosen up over time.

Yeah, This is what I was referring to and hoping to hear. For seem reason this truck seems more refined overall than my 2019, so the shifter action really stood out.

I have 350 miles on my new '21 Pro I just took delivery two weeks ago and the shifter movement itself loosens up after you use it a bit. Mine is fine, I don't have any issues with that. The transmission shift patterns and gearing and all of that is another story. And yes ECT is the way to go. Or Sport shift to limit shifting to 4th gear especially around town or ECT + Sport Shift.

My 18 that I had was stiff at first . Give it a little bit of time to see if it breaks in if not warranty it .

I got mine about a month ago and thought the same. It was difficult to get it to shift sometimes. Luckily after about 500 miles it's all good

Thanks for all of the replies. It is comforting to know that this seems like the norm and that it does improve.

At 11k plus miles its perfectly acceptable. I guess its just the way toyota intended them to work.

Certainly seems that way. I will say that mine has loosened up a bit just driving it all day today. I think it has 70 miles now.
