I thought the trapping of water, dirt, etc was with the rubber-based undercoatings like Ziebart and such....

Best time when the chassis is clean, and new to bomb it with cosmoline rp 342. Did mine with it a few months after i got the truck. Its been though a salty nasty winter. Job still looks as good as yesterday. I've used fluid film in the past which is ok, but it has to reapplied every year, or rust will set in. With cosmoline its one time, and done with the exception of some touchups if you off-road a lot.

The old school rubberized undercoating will trap water. Fluid Film is much less viscous and will not trap anything.

Nowadays, they do a thin layer of vulcanized rubber that’s actually an active coating. No need to touch up yearly as well.

They salt the roads here in North ID but I won't worry about it since I'll just trade and get another one in a year or two.

Yup, one crack or chip in those rubberized coatings and they with let water get trapped in. You want a nice waxy coating over your chassis. Companies like bmw, and mercedes use cosmoline for a reason...longevity. Same for our military using it.

    Thanks everyone,
Fj was here long before I got it with no treatments but I kept it clean and sprayed a moisture shield on it every year since I owned it along with silicone soray on all the wheels. Kept it in same shape I got it in.

So what your thoughts on this? I have connections to get as much of this as one could want.
From my research on the site and the net it is cosmoline under crc name. And going off a sailing site its great stuff for moisture protection

    Hmm . . . none as yet, that's why i'm here . . .
Applied fluid film. Truck sat for two days in 80 plus temps. Few days later had torrential down pour while driving, most of what I can see of where I applied FF, it has all washed off. Pissed.

On my 2010 I sprayed the heck out of my frame with motorcycle chain wax when it was brand new. That stuff is expensive, but probably one of the best coatings you could apply. I then sprayed it with CRC or PB Blaster (whatever Home Depot had) every fall. FWIW, I also hit the hood latch and cable, spare tire cable, gas flap hinges, and most of the nuts and bolts under the hood. I HATE wrenching on rusty junk.

I never qualified for a frame replacement (mixed blessing I guess) and just traded the truck in for a new 2021.

I’m now getting a little long in the tooth for crawling under my truck every fall, so I think I’ll pay someone else to get greasy and go the fluid film route on this new rig.

Bottom line, though, is you should do something. Either Fluid Film, or Woolwax, or DIY CRC spray but do something if you want to keep your truck.

if you leased it, do absolutely nothing and just post photos for the rest of us!

I had my 2020 truck ceramic glass coated along with the wheels. Be interesting how long the finish holds up. When i had the tundra, no matter how much silicon spray, or wax used on those wheels, 12 years was about it with our new england climate, and roads.

So here in Florida this is unnecessary? I’m a Florida native and never heard of rust proofing a vehicle. Why don’t they do the rust proofing at the factory?

FWIW, my 2010 wheels chipped and oxidized after only a few years. The looked awful.

I ultimately replaced them with 17” 4Runner wheels I got for a steal on eBay.

I’m hopeful my new Off Road wheels last longer than my old Sport wheels did. I’m really not certain what can be done to protect the alloy wheels.
