New 2022 Tacoma Sport spare tire rim size is 16”, wheels on truck are 17” rims! This seems way wrong! How about the rest of you with “off road” and limited? What’s up with Toyota?

Doesn't really matter, as it's a temporary thing, and it's a steelie. The tire diameter is the same. Plus no TPMS in it. (why it's temporary)

They changed it up at some point, my 2017 Sport came with a 17". In all likelihood the change was to make parts assembly cleaner... it doesn't really matter what size spare rim the truck has, only that is does the job it needs to do.

Outer diameter is what is key.

If you have 265/65/17 tires, your spare should be a 265/70/16 to match.

Well may I’m just to old school, It used to be that one cycled one’s tires through all tires when rotating. Think about this, now your replacing a different size tire for your spare. Ten years down the line you will not want to depend on that spare that been rotting away under your truck. If your rotated tires including the spare most likely you would have a more recent tire, used yes but newer! What just amazes me is that Toyota cuts corners on their most popular truck and hangs the owner out in the wind. Wheel rims should be same size so that tires are interchangeable so your not hunting for various sizes!

In a cost cutting measure for Toyota. The 2023 Sports will be equipped with a unique version of the 2022 Trail Edition wheel. Finish will either be silver, full machined face, or black with machine accents, like the current Sport wheel. Which ever Toyota deems to be the cheapest finish. The Trail Edition will be discontinued after 2022.

Most trucks, if not all, these days have a black steel spare wheel and aluminum “mags” for the four road wheels. So unless you are gonna run one steel wheel 80% of the time, nobody is doing ‘5 tire rotations’ with OEM equipment. Hence, Toyota just gives you a spare with the right outside diameter, regardless of rim size.

So as I pointed out, one is saddled with an odd sized tire to replace. That is an extra expense! Also most will not replace the spare as it ages out. As to rotating the spare.. you know they still can dismount and remount tires on steel and alloy wheels!

It's only an added expense if you replace it.

Your spare key doesn't look anything like your fob, yet it serves its purpose because it's a spare

why is it an added expense, are 17 inch tires free? If so I really got ripped off on my off road, I have to pay for all 5 tires!

That would just be an added expense mounting and remounting, exactly what you dont want...

I think you're giving this way too much thought. I never replace any of the spare tires on my three trailers or my other two trucks unless the sun gets to them (the ones on my trailers are exposed, the ones on my trucks are not) or I change the tire size on the truck. My Taco is the only truck I own which has a 'new' spare tire, the rest were used tires I bought to match the larger tire sizes I'm running on them. The spares on my T100 and Silverado are both 15-20 years old. Both could be used today if I needed them; I check their condition regularly so no added expense of changing a tire for no reason. Just top-off air once or twice a year and call it good

If you really want something to worry about, figure-out a way to keep your spare tire and wheel from getting stolen. I had a cable and lock wrapped around the spare on my Taco by the second day I owned it. Having had a spare tire stolen from under my T100 25 years ago when I was in College I make sure to secure the spare now.

Gonna complain about the donut in the trunk of most cars too? Spare tires are almost always not the same as the 4 on the ground.

Some cars don't even come with a spare now a days. How do you feel about that? Guess you would really be pissed off...

Go buy a matching rim and tire then? For 99% of owners it’s fine.

Wait until he find out that Lexus paints their spare wheel yellow. Or worse that most cars don’t come with a spare now.

Must be Friday. I’ve never seen or heard of any truck coming with a matching spare to rotate. Some people buy a matching wheel and tire to do 5 wheel rotations. But never stock from the factory.
