My 2007 4.0 L has 234K miles on it and sounds awesome and runs great.
My new 3.5L TRD OR motor sounds like a diesel. I hate the sound, it clicks and sounds like its got lifter issues or old time tappets going bad.
I asked the dealer about this and was told its the new engine and they all do that and sound the same.
I really question this as it sounds like crap and makes me wonder if this motor will EVER run for 200K miles without self destructing.

Not to mention its anemic performance with its so called higher HP./

    Am I the only one?

Nope you aren't, but it shouldn't sound like a diesl unless its trying to push itself in to high of gear and hasnt down shifted, have you had the tsb rev-1 done? Is the truck on diff recall?

The tapping sound you are hearing is coming from the highpressure direct injectors. they all do it.

That sucks then. The diesel sound I described is when its idling.
Its just a noisy engine with the clicking that you guys are claiming is the injectors.
I just had it in to the dealer and yes it has a recall, they had to order the part, its that engine sensor.
They told me it had NO other recalls BUT, when I asked them about the transmission reflash, they looked it up and said sure enough there is a bulletin out and they
went ahead and reprogrammed it but said it was not actually a recall item

ALL high pressure injectors for direct engines tick, across ALL brands. But I'm sure you're a more qualified engineer than those who work at Toyota

No float valve to unstick or sunken float to replace, no slipped points or lifters to regap or idle mixture screw to adjust, sheesh, what's with these new Tacoma engines and all that noise?! Mine too! I do love it though, mine has a lot of power and towing with it is a breeze.

The cleaning cycle kicks in at Idle so its possible you could be hearing that too. Tacoma engines have always been a little on the noisy side, my 17 does not really sound any louder than my old 4.0 Tacos did.

IIRC, I saw a video where Mike Sweers said it was the injectors self cleaning. I'll have to look for that tomorrow.....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_GR_engine - OP, here some reading. I think this engine will go a long time as it has been around. I hear the AT is shift happy, but I really do not have real world experience as I never drove it.

So the original post basically amounts to "I don't like the way the engine sounds, therefore it's probably garbage".

    Got it.

Also saw that you mentioned the recalls and transmission revision. The transmission flash isn't a recall. It was a TSB so you would have to bring it in and mention a concern before they would look into and offer it.

This is what you are hearing. It's normal and is for the good.
