I have the same problem with mine. It is a slug up a 7% grade at 7000 feet though but I could care less. I only take a long trip in it once a year. The rest of the time it's dirt roads and 15 miles each way to work. In the dirt the 2.7 is all anyone needs.

I don't know if you have already bought your truck, but I'll post my comment anyway. I have been driving a 2016 Access cab 2.7L, 4x4 for the past year. I owned the same in the model year 2012 for a year prior. No lack of power whatsoever, even with 500 pounds in the bed. Accelerates decently if you go over 3,000 rpm. Operates perfectly in snowy and icy roads we have here in southern Quebec. About the same fuel consumption as the V6, which costs about $2,000CAD more.
I am satisfied with the 4 cylinder except for fuel consumption I expected it to be lower which was the case with the 2012. I would now buy the V6 for greater resale value and ease of resale: I don't tow, but the potential buyer might want to. :canada:

For me, another motivator was the transmission...I wanted a manual.
    All manual V6s come with a 6spd, not impressed after a test-drive :(

    Love my 5spd, 2.7L with 33s :)

I have a 4 cyl 4x4 manual 16 access cab sr5. It's awesome. I've driven the v6 tacomas as well and went with the 4 banger in part because of the first gear ratio. Starting from a standstill is slower, but the control you get in snow is very good. Crawling feels controlled and traction is solid. Having a v6 is a "nice to have" but by no means is it necessary! I can personally back up the 4x4 4 cyl. It's excellent.

I have a 2012 2.7 with a 5 speed manual and 4x4. I live in upstate New York were we get lots of snow and have decent terrain. This past winter I had no problems at all and can say that the 4 cylinder has plenty of power for 4x4 and that it will do just fine. Only thing I noticed is you have to be a little more aggressive when leaving from a stop and since you are putting power to four wheels and not two. Acceleration is slightly less when using four wheel drive but is still plenty quick for passing or getting out of the way of other vehicles. As far as climbing hills and steep terrain four wheel drive will help greatly if there is snow even though it will be more of an effort for the vehicle and more power consuming. Biggest thing is if you do decide on the four cylinder and four wheel drive I would advise you to go with the 5 speed manual so that you avoid unwanted gear changes when trying to climb hills or trudge through snow.

I bought a 2017 Tacoma 4x4 access cab with the 2.7. I would say it is adequately powered. Its done fine in 4wd when I've needed it. No regrets!
