My service manager told me he has been there at Toyota for 7 years and never encountered this issue.... He also bragged about how his 3 master techs there have all concluded it was the axel flange near the rear brake drum. You mean to tell me that within 2 hours of them having the truck, their master techs KNEW EXACTLY what the problem was? I highly doubt they checked all the easy and obvious stuff first such as brake drums, brake lines, master cylinder, slave cylinder, vacuum pump, but in reality skipped all the typical brake issues and went straight to "PIN-POINTED It was your axles". I know they skipped all the easy and obvious stuff because it ISN'T their first time encountering this problem, and I highly doubt it isn't the "first time" this service manager has encountered this issue in his 7 year tenure there. Otherwise the truck is fine, but I bought a brand new truck because I want a brand new driving experience with no issues. Service Manager said to let them make it right and for that, Ok, sure, I'll allow the opportunity... but the problem would've easily been caught with a PDI upon the truck's arrival and prep for dealership front line.

i have this same vibe but only when braking. 5000 miles on my new tacoma. really not looking forward to multiple trips to dealer and they never fix. read some, and it can be brakes/axles/springs/prop shaft/magic. thoughts?

mine vibes from around 35 down to like 25 or 20. All in the seat. Throwing truck in neutral while it does it has zero affect.

    Sounds like driveline TSB.

Measure the angles of the diff flange and driveshaft to see if they are out of tolerance.

I have a 1” block in the rear. Noticed the vibrations a few weeks after the blocks were installed. Can’t say for sure if it was there before the lift or not but it’s the exact vibration that’s being described here.

It seems some trucks come with a shim from the factory. My TRD Sport didn’t. I measured the driveline angle and the difference was 4.3 degrees (measured in my driveway, that’s not very accurate) — 4.31 is out of spec.

I installed 2.5 degree shims and most of the 30mph -> 10mph judder/vibration is gone. I am under warranty, but I did this myself because I hate the idea of someone else working on my truck.

I, however, am still experiencing pretty heavy vibration under braking. Mostly from the rear. I suspect the axles are warped, but I may try and replace the drums first. If the vibration returns with new drums, then I will take it in and have them check and probably replace the axles.

Following up from my 1st and 2nd post on this page, I took my truck to another dealership and within 4 hours, service manager called and said Yes the technician felt the vibrations and fixed the issue by replacing both rear drums. Drove there 3 hours later to pick it up and WALLA! Problem has been solved. I'll be sure to bring it back to this 2nd dealership in the future. Tustin Toyota is awesome!

But did they measure your axles? They should have checked the axle flange diameter across 3 points. Warped axles are one of the primary causes of brake drum issues on the 3rd generation.

If they are warped, you’ll have vibration from the drums again because they will get out of round.

1st dealership replaced axles, vibration was less but still continued and would’ve been felt if they test drove it after, took it to another dealership and they replaced drums. So both drums and axels are new.

Bizarre that they didn’t replace it all at once!

I know right? 1st dealership tech clearly didn’t test drive it before nor after, vibration was obvious. He just did a part swap. Guess they didn’t want the warranty work. Not a good look on the tech nor service manager but all good, the other dealership down the street handled it in hours.

6 month update: so i'm at about 2,200 miles now, and unfortunately this started happening to me at around 500 miles. I haven't had a chance to bring it to the dealer. This thread is very informative, and I will certainly bring it to their attention if they try to pull any 'oh i've never heard of this before' nonsense.

quoted my post history to catch everybody up on my situation.

February 4th, truck was brought in for oil change and I brought up the vibrations again. Service guy said he wants to go for a drive with me. So we go up and down the frontage road and he confirms the issue.

Dealer says they are going to have a “Toyota Field Rep” look at and decide what to do. “Toyota Field Rep” confirms the issue. They decide to put 3rd set of Drums on the truck. Dealer called to update me saying that the new drums made the problem worse. They explained that they are basically going to order and replace everything in the rear axle that spins. I’m guessing bearings, axles, rear drums and any associated seals. I can’t imagine they would do the ring gear / pinion gear.

Said they would call and update today or Monday.

im having these vibration issues as well and have only 600 miles on the truck. Was hoping the brakes were just wearing in but it’s clear I’ll probably have to bring it in to the dealer. Pretty disappointed as the biggest reason I bought a Tacoma was its “reliability”

4 years and now @ 20k. Replaced drums @15k "fixed" it, but as noted in prior posts only fixed the symptom. It's back. Someday......

P.S. I was one of the very first to experience the CPS (crankshaft position sensor) crapping out. They replaced it. Prior to the new part being made available. But the replacement seemed "fine". At my simple scheduled 20k service I asked them to check to see if the replacement CPS was the new spec. I didn't think to ask when I pick up the truck what the found. But upon leaving the dealership within two miles it seemed like I had a new truck. I checked the ticket and indeed, they replaced the CPS. My truck ran better with the latest CPU update prior to this. But it is now much better.

All this to say that maybe they'll eventually get the drum/axle/whatever tracked down. I've no doubt it will cost some of us due to being out of warranty.
