Stupid tech is probably thinking it’s a needle bearing issue. Because that’s a normal issue too.

I'm starting to wonder if maybe the tech was just being a smartass... "field tech advises to remove driveshaft and road test... vibration not present without driveshaft" I mean he's technically not wrong!

If the truck ain't movin, it can't vibrate.

i know i said the same thing when he called me to give me the details. He said they disconnected rear driveshaft and put it in 4wd. He also told me they swapped in a driveshaft from another 19 and my truck behaved the same. Service adviser told me my rear axles are the updated versions which toyota is installing on the '16-18's per the tsb. but he's not ruling them out as being out of spec. i'll just keep bringing it in until they either come up with an actual solution, or they get me into a 4runner trd pro :D

For what it's worth mine has the same vibration since maybe 1,500-2,000 miles. Now at 4400 miles. It's worse sometimes, usually when dead cold...and other times it's nearly gone... or completely gone maybe when I don't notice. Seems ambient temperature sensitive +equipment temp sensitive.

...forgot to add I've been told by another member there is a TSB for the rear drums or axle shaft flanges being out of spec. Replaced under warranty and fixed it. Others have reported this did not fix it and driveline angle shims fixed it.

i'm personally leaning toward shims fixing the problem, but haven't read about toyota implementing this alteration as a permanent fix. If this truck wasn't under warranty, it's the first thing i would try. I'm of course speaking about my MY '19 truck in it's current state. apparently the drums, flanges and axles are all in spec- so that's where my assumption is coming from

I'm gonna mention it to my service dept at my 5,000 mile. Along with the rear diff singing at 50-60 mph. Still love the truck even tho there's a few things that aren't great.

I will say after lifting my front about 0.75 inches and getting an alignment, the vibration seems to be lessened.

No shims for me yet, but maybe later if it keeps on annoying me. I doubt Toyota will be of much help for the vibration or the rear end whining...unless I spend a good amount of my free time pushing them. I had a brand new F150 before this that I wasted countless hours with at service depts. I'm not gonna do that with Toyota unless I really have to.

interesting how leveling out the front, lessens vibrations. i think it lends to the theory about unsprung weight lifting up the rear of the truck when braking, increasing driveline angles.

i'm with you about staying away from the dealer. i know i said i'd keep pestering them, but i really don't have the time. Maybe if i'm off from work for a week i'd drop it off, but i'm not going to stress about rides to work or otherwise put myself out for this.

    I'm with ya on that.

Also, the Bilstein setup i just put on has much less brake dive. So that could be a factor too...although on mine i do not think it's actually the brakes causing it. Ive felt it vibrate without the brakes before, to a lesser degree.

So I posted this on another thread about the same problem, figured you guys would get a kick out of it as well.

"So after buying my truck I was having the vibration problem. Took it to Toyota and they said my front rotors where out of spec, and they replaced them under warranty.

Now I'm having the same problem again and even sometimes when breaking I get a lunging thump every so often.

Took it back to Toyota today for another inspection and their answer again was my front rotors and they said they will replace them again pro bono. I told the guy I never had this problem on my wife's car, my old 4Runner, or my 2nd gen Tacoma. He said it was luck of the draw and my driving pattern.

I'm getting pretty annoyed, and I'm upset I spent money on a brand new truck and am having this problem that Toyota is pretty much telling me its happening because how I drive.

Sorry for any grammatical errors, I'm angry typing on mobile.

Also, just to note, I just hit 30k"

New 2020 tacoma sr owner. I am having this issue with my tacoma. Lately I have been messing around with the ebrake using it to slow down the vehicle from 50 to 30 mph intermittently to help bed in the drums with the shoes. It seems to be help somewhat. Use of the ebrake also causes the self-adjuster to actuate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZoChjn_1KM

Let me know if this helps anyone. I would be interested to know.

For future reference, watch this. It's very informative, and you get to see master tech's make magic art in drive shafts. Good luck.

I have the vibration. Noticed it fairly quickly after I bought the truck. I have about 2500 miles on it now and after my dealer turned the rotors (says they saw hot spots and asked if I had been towing anything - “nope.”) it seemed a bit better. Less than 500 miles later and it’s worse. I’ll be taking it back in. Certainly feels more like a drivetrain issue than it does brakes. I feel the vibes in the seat.

Same problem here but waiting till I won’t feel bad taking my truck in for something while not driving much. Feels like I’m braking on a rough spot on the road. Need to get it looked at before I can lift and get tires.

did you have your drums replaced? I just ordered centric drums from rock auto. Will post back with results. The vibration is definately from the rear end and only when braking...

Do you not have a concern of violating warranty with non OEM parts ?
