It usually takes a tank for the ECU to update and adjust mix with the MAS's new readings, you may notice a drop in MPG during this time, keep the new air filter in and give it two tanks and then watch your mileage.

Yep. I remember me and my dad taking his carb apart before we wnet on vacations in the mountains and changing the jets in it. That was on a big 400 fat block.

Good idea. I will keep this thread in my backpocket and update in a week or two. If the mileage does not come back up, I will get an OEM one put it in and then go a couple of tanks.

    Thanks to All!

I was blowing black soot out my tail pipe onto my rear quarter panel for 6 months, was in Toyota the other day getting service and asked the mechenic, he said it sounds like its burning rich, then out of the blue asked if I was running a K&N filter( I was) He said replace with a Toyota Filter and give it a few fill ups. Its only been a few days now but no black soot on quarter panel, I will keep you updated.

Is a K&N a standard paper filter like the OEM? The Wix that I installed is the same type of filter as the OEM. I will keep my eye out for any sootiness.

    Thanks

No K&N is an oiled filter. They let a ton of dirt particles into the engine. I will never let one touch anything I own

Well I think the ecm or whatever is re-calibrating itself now. I have driven about 600 miles since putting in the new Wix air filter and the last fill-up yielded me 19.4 mpg. Pretty much all in town driving.

I am heading out on a camping adventure in a couple of weeks so I should get some highway miles, but that will be with a canoe in the back flipped upside down so I may not get real good mpg.

    Thanks again.

No you won't get better mileage. The engine is still working just as hard. The throttle controls airflow, not fuel flow. You don't push the throttle down as far but you're getting more air sucked in for a given throttle position because your filter is allowing more air in. The mixture is pretty constant.

Keep the charcoal filter. Removing it has no affect on the engine.

hang on here guys, lets get a consensus about this k&n filter deal here.. Who thinks k&n filters produce better fuel mileage/perf/and longevity vs a paper replacement..
Basically who thinks k&n is worthy of being used and who thinks they are worthless and why??

I dont like them, as out here, they let alot of dirt into the engine. Also, no filter id gonna make a dramatic change in MPG. The engines pumping loss is mainly due to the throttle plate being mostly closed when driving. Its the largest restriction in the intake tract. Also, givent the large surface area of the filter, then engine isnt seeing it as a huge restriction, even under WOT.
