My alternator went out. Bought a replacement. For some reason I cannot get the bolts to line up with the brackets. The replacement is the correct part. Now when I try to check the original one I cannot get that one to line up again. With the top bolt in it seems the bolt to the bottom bracket is off by 1/2".

Yes, I couldn't get the old one to align up. No idea why. It should be pretty straight forward. I even measured the top bolt to bottom bracket. Then measured the alternators bolt mounts.

Sounds like the adjustment bracket has moved the only other thing that would have moved

The harness sitting under the alternator ?

    Pictures might be a help

I'll post some pics in a bit. I called a mobile mechanic. Can't go to work without transportation. I have 2 new alternators. One came in late so I had to order another one for somewhere else. It can in early. Right now it's just sitting in the engine bay.

When I put the top bolt in it won't align with the bottom bottom bracket.

Maybe you should put the top in 1st before the bottom. I can't see the bottom but that is what I'd probably do. I have a feeling the bottom is adjustable to tension the belt.

I tried that. Top first. I saw a video of someone going bottom first. Tried that too. The bottom is a solid bracket. I tried to move it & it won't budge. I never had to replace my alternator & it been years since I've done one. Just reviewed how to off this video.

Bottom bracket is not solid, the top is. The bottom is where you adjust the belt. Please mount everything up and take a pic. You'll have to massage the top part of the alt to the solid bracket.

I'll try that. I would have thought that putting my old one back on that it would mount right back up. It was off just as much as the others. I know it has to be able to go back on.

The top has to go in 1st, not sure why you're mounting the bottom 1st. Thats how I've always done it.

According to the last picture, I think you have the bottom mount ear in the wrong position. From what i can see, you have the mounting ear in front of the bracket. If I recall correctly, the alt ear sits behind the slotted bracket coming from the block, the bolt goes through the alt ear from behind and through the slotted bracket and the nut tightens down to the bracket. The alt mounting ear is placed behind the slotted bracket and in front of the bolt.

If you placed the alt mounting ear in front of the bracket, the top mount will be completely off.

If the adjusting bracket does not move How did you get the belt off ??

Might be quite interesting to tighten the belt .

The bottom bracket has to move .

No wonder it won`t bolt up .

The pic was just where I left the alternator. Originally I the belt bracket was loosened with the bolt that tightens the belt. I never moved the bottom bracket only removed the bolt & screw. It ends up that the bottom bracket can be adjusted and moved. That was how the alternator went back on. I just figured if I never moved it why would I have to.

    I appreciate this community & it's input.
