We live in the valley and I surf 4 days a week - would love a better drive experience in the canyons. Granted I just sold a bmx sports wagon.

Any suggestions on an tune in LA or OC? @trdquoc?

Dad and the boys love our new truck!

Having to tune a truck just to get it to drive acceptable is terrible. What is going on with these trucks? One third of the people on here say it's perfectly fine, one third of you guys say it sucks to drive period, the last third are along for the ride no matter what, they don't notice shit while driving. So, with such a wide discrepancy between drivers, it's hard to say whats up with this truck now a days.

Nice truck OP, there is a tune out there that everyone likes a lot, but you have to be a computer geek to install it.

The 2nd 1/3 you mentioned are owners who found this website and got hooked on it who initially thought their truck was fine .

Unrealistic expectations of a body on frame TRUCK. There’s nothing wrong with the truck.

I came from high performance german stuff. I have absolutely no issues with my MT AC OR. But I also understood what I was getting into.

Isn’t the Tacoma the last body on frame mid sized truck? I’ve had 6 Tacomas, the 3rd gen wasn’t for me.

The problem is that people think their pickup truck should perform like a BMW 3 Series.

But of course you got the MT . I was paying attention to the drive train while test driving, not the bells and whistles .
Hence i opted for my 2019 trd sport MT . Enjoying every ride for 30 k miles .

My 2018 could have used a tune but my 2020 doesn't need one. Night and day performance, both stock OR AT DCSB. Not sure why?

The funny thing is that I was becoming increasingly more frustrated with the direction that most German [Auto] manufacturers are taking - absolute tech overload and luxury taking precedence over the driving experience. I’m in the minority that doesn’t care about tech or luxury.
I wanted to get away from all of that while also getting into a new form of wheeling [off roading], and hauling some other toys around, so a manual Tacoma fit the bill perfectly.
I love this truck. Cloth seats, no sunroof, simple interior, limited tech, and excellent driving characteristics, for what it is and what I use it for.
In the future I’ll get another small high power german coupe, but it’ll be used and a few generations old. After my last ‘20 BMW, I’ve almost lost all interest in the newest of the new autos.

It’s surprising how many people do not do this and are instead entranced by all the fancy features. And that’s exactly why the automotive industry caters to those people.... and why we see threads about how much the [insert any auto here] sucks from the factory.

Anyway, old man rant over, back to regular programming...

I would agree, I got a tune from @TWTaco when my truck was 600 miles new. Definitely worth it.

I think all of them are body on frame except for the Honda Ridgeline (aka minivan with a bed)

Sorry, but no. I came from a 2011 Durango with the 3.6L V6, much heavier vehicle with a similarly underpowered V6. But guess what? The Durango had much better manners, especially on the highway. The gearing of the transmission matched the (lack of) power band of the engine, and only downshifted at highway speeds when I wanted it to...not every time I hit a hill.

Pretty sad state when the Daimler-Chrysler engineers of a decade ago make the current Toyota folks look like amateurs who don't account for real world driving.

I don't disagree with you, but I had a killer time tossing the Taco up and down canyon roads. I caught up to so many cars that it wasn't even funny. I came from too many FWD cars though. The Taco is the most fun that I have had on 4wheels as a total package.

I have a 2020 AT V6 4X4 and drove around with ECT always on because I hated the way the truck drove without it. I now have a 87 octane OVTune and no longer use ECT, truck is drivable now without it. My fuel economy is better now also.
