I just got a new ARE MX shell put on yesterday, and this morning I found this:

It looks like a very rough cut. From inside there is this big hole that will probably leak:

Is this normal for an ARE camper shell? I paid $1600 for this and would hope there would be no leaks. And that rough cut is ridiculous. Does anyone know if this is how ARE Campers come?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Maybe they cut it to fit your truck better??? Did you watch them put it on? I've had a couple of caps and they never looked like there.go back to the dealer and freak out.ask to see another cap and compare if they try to jerk you around

Not sure what the picture shows, but I can tell you that unless you put some silicone in the corners, it's gonna leak.

Picture 1, you'd think they could put some moulding over that or something. On the other hand, I'm pretty utilitarian about my rig so interior cosmetic ugliness wouldn't bug me TOO much. (There are some rough-looking cuts on mine, BTW. But without carpeting, it looks more like they belong. ;))

Picture 2, I'm not sure where/what that is.

IME the biggest leak spot is at the front. The front lip of the bed is lower than the sides and it's tricky to get a good seal in those corners. The "pro" installer messed that up & I had to redo it. (The camper retailers in this area seem to be pretty seedy, so I decided it was best to do any future work myself.)

BTW, it looks in photo #1 like the camper shell is lodged as far forward as possible. Just make sure there's at least 1/4" clearance between the shell and the cab. If not, the shell might bash a dent in the cab when you drive over uneven terrain. (Don't ask me how I know...)

    Good luck with everything.

Here's supposed to be window over that I believe. That is a bit odd.
Caps are very cheaply made my a.r.e . was by far the best... both sides look the same....

I went out and looked at mine. It is exactly the same as yours, or atleast pretty close to the same. Your gap looks just a tiny bit wider than mine.

    edit to add:

On the upside, your truck looks sweet with the cap!

Thanks for the info, I guess I shouldn't be too worried if that is the way they come. I did notice that one of the rivets is only 1/2 way in, maybe that is the problem. I like the way it looks, not bad for a standard cam IMO.

My ARE CX looks like your pictures. I don't really notice if water comes in when it's raining, but it does in a carwash. I've got the oem bed mat so unless it's from a carwash the water runs under the mat. I'd still take it back and see what they say. FWIW, I've read complaints that both ARE and Leer's quality and customer service has gone down in recent years.

That trim part at the bottom of the swinging glass seems awfully narrow. Not a huge deal I suppose. (Rain would mostly get on the lip of the tailgate.) I have a gap at the same spot, but it's much narrower - about 3/16". Definitely can't fit a finger in. That section looks like it could be fairly easily replaced.

Aside from that, the rig does look sweet. I'd love to have that high ceiling and those swing-up side windows. :)

the dealer should be able to play with the hinges on the window.. seems like its closer on the drivers side.. might just need to be centered..also they did a horrible job with the wiring, you should be able to clean that up yourself easily

Just checked my CX and it has the same gap. But just like Jefenator said, not big enough to get a finger through. The bottom trim piece could be replaced with one that was cut to a tighter fit. I had a CX for an F-150, and it didn't need a trim piece at the bottom. Initially, I thought it was a pretty cheap looking fix, but it works fine. I haven't had any major leakage issues, but I also have not been in a lot of rain yet either; it's keeping more water out than it's letting in. Good luck. Keep us posted.
