New around here..what the hell is this sound?

2005 2.7 manual

I never had a Tacoma before. I’m used to driving 100 series land cruisers which never left me stranded. It’s been fun up until today. What the hell is this sound and has anyone heard anything like it?

oil is new
Swapped out plugs still nothing
All pulleys are tight
No codes present

Do I need to save up for a new engine? Looking forward to learning.

How many miles?
Open the oil fill cap and check for any sludge buildup. It may not be a tell all.
Get a mechanic's stethoscope and start probing. Amazon and Harbor Freight sell them

 

180k. There’s definitely sludge buildup.

 

Looks like time for a low-miles used engine. As dtaco10 said it could be oil sludge due to neglect by previous owners (there may have been multiple owners). Can open up the valve cover and have a look directly.

 

If there's sludge build, your oil change is probably the first one it's had in years. There is a method on TW on how to attempt to clean the engine internals, but those noises indicate something more severe. If not, do an internet search on Berryman B12 engine cleaning. It may work.

 

I'd pop the belt off first and run it for a few seconds to make sure it's not something on the belt drive but it sounds more like a timing chain/phaser knock/rattle than a rod knock.

 

Taking it to the dealership tomorrow.
