I had a conversation with our lead reliability engineer during one of the training classes at work. His opinion on one of the reasons the decline in battery quality is related to manufactures were having hard time sourcing quality virgin lead over the years to make battery plates. Virgin lead is better then recycled lead. The very last U.S. lead smelter shut down in 2013. You can get Mexican imports, but the quality isn't the same. Also, modern cars draws massive amount of power with all the electronics packed in each vehicle, the energy cycles are major contributors to speed up the degradation on the batteries.

    This is from Odyssey:
Whether for everyday or emergency use, today’s vehicles are loaded with more electronics than would have been imaginable just a few years ago. ODYSSEY batteries have been designed to keep up with the changes. Because their plates are made of pure virgin lead (unlike the lead alloy in most batteries), we can pack in more plates. And more plates mean more plate surface area, and much more power — twice the overall power and three times the life of conventional batteries — up to 400 cycles at 80% depth of discharge!

ODYSSEY batteries deliver the massive starting power, rapid recovery, and amazing deep cycling capability that today’s vehicles demand.

The cheap 24F agm's from Wally World work just fine. 4 year replacement warranty and made in Korea.

Are you a sales rep for this battery company?

Either way, when the engine is running, the battery is doing nothing but getting charged by the alternator.

No, completely different industry, but we use a lot of SLA batteries in our plants.

We also use Odyssey batteries in our cars at my previous job.

40 years pushing gas cars, trucks and motorcycles around the country taught me that - you’re absolute right! (That, and doing PMs in military.)

If one headlight/taillight burns out, replace both. First sign the battery struggles in the winter, time to replace. I’ve averaged 5 years, give or take, on batteries. YMMV

Don't know about today, but back in the day the batteries in my motorcycles were crap. I'd barely get a year out of them before they were toast, and they were never cheap to replace.

A dead battery isn't a minor convenience for everyone. Some of us don't live close to the store or have people that can help out at the drop of a hat. So, peace of mind for $100 is well worth it, which is only $33 a year if you keep it for 3. Best money you can spend.

A dead battery when one is 20 miles offroad with only hungry coyotes and gila monsters as company is not just an inconvenience. Even of the freeway it can be quite the problem. West Texas along I-20 can be 20 miles between exits, and only "picnic area" areas (no restrooms, just field mice) even close ... bad place to lose a battery at 2 AM on a Sunday.

    On my fourth battery

    1. Oem only lasted one year.
    2. Oem warranty replacement lasted two years
    3. Autozone battery lasted one year.
    4. Currently on Autozone warranty replacement.

Batteries don't last that long in Palm Springs heat.

That is a fake story. They never made it and filmed the entire thing at Paramount Studios (filmset #12) to sell the story. :anonymous:

That's one small step to change it before it goes dead or one giant pain in the arse if you wait until it goes dead. Or something like that. :oldglory:
