    Hello!

I just got new pads and rotors on my tacoma and my pedal is softer than it was before... My truck still stops but I have to push further for it to stop and I haven't done any rapid deceleration yet (60 to 10, I'm hoping the shop did after the change and I'll call and confirm). Is this normal? After getting stopped, I can get my pedal to the floor with a hard push. When my truck is OFF, I can get my pedal to the floor with a light to medium push.

    Normal? Concerns?

    Thanks!

Sounds a little odd to me; I would expect the pedal to have less travel, if anything, as more fluid would be pushed back in to the reservoir. Have you checked the mastery cylinder? They may have removed some fluid prior to compressing the pistons in order to avoid overflow and forgotten to top it up.

Thanks. It does feel odd. I called the shop and they said they will check it out for me... I'm at work right now. But I will check the master cylinder after work

That wouldn't lead to a soft pedal though. I have seen posts indicating that people had to take their trucks to a Toyota dealer to have them bleed the brakes with a Toyota laptop (because of the ABS system) to cure a soft pedal.

Interesting. Could it just be softer because the pads/rotors are brand new? With hard pushing, is it normal to be able to get the pedal to the floor? I never noticed I could that before but I never really tried.

Is it normal for me to be able to get the pedal down to the floor with my engine off?

You have a major problem which could turn dangerous. You may have some air in the lines or a master cylinder going bad. I’m guessing most likely they need to bleed the lines again.

I mean I can definitely get stopped... It just stops with the pedal pushed in further than before the pad/rotor change so it's concerning me lol. My brakes were very very touchy before the change so this change is so different for me that I want advice. Also, I literally drove from the shop to work (6 miles) so they haven't been "broken in yet" and like I said, I hope the shop bedded them in

I had a soft pedal ever since I bought my truck. Changed pads and calipers. Still soft.

I drained the resivoir as much as possible. Filled it back up and started bleeding every brake until fluid ran clear.

This firmed the pedal right up. As brake fluid gets older,it degrades and stop's being as effective

Also have them check and adjust the rear brake shoes. If they are not adjusted properly it will cause exactly the symptoms you are having.

They said they bled the lines, but I'll have them also check the rear when I bring it in

    Thank you everyone

New pads can feel softer than old thin ones. They should get a little firmer after a few heat cycles.

But if the shop flushed the system or opened up the bleeders some air may have been introduced.

And check the rear shoe adjustment

With truck off you should pump the brakes and the pedal should get hard to push in a few pumps...maybe 5. It shouldnt go to floor.

They got air in system, if it was working "normal" when you took it in

I just changed my front pads and rotor a couple of weeks ago. I bled all four corners and my pedal is just as good as it was if not better. Like others have said, make sure your rear wheel cylinders are adjusted out properly and have them bleed them again. If you don't have bad parts, the soft pedal is due to too much fluid displacement (wheel cylinders) or air in the system.
Life's too short to live with crappy brakes.

Even with pumps, it remains soft. And yea they were normal to me. Thanks!
