Like every other cool old reliable engine it succumbed to new emissions and fuel economy demands.

In the last 5 years we have owned 3 new GMC's, a 2500 Crew and 2 Durmax's. Hauled horses, trailers, dirtbikes, farm equip, tons of rock and dirt, etc..
Then bought a new Tundra to do work somewhere in the middle.....
Loved em all. Had the first Duramax (2010) in the shop once for a running light failure under warranty. They run hard for us and have been the most comfortable trucks ever produced
Not sure why all the hate for GM...or Ford for that matter. They are trucks built with the human factor equated in just like all makes and models.

Go sit at a big Toyota dealership shop and watch the new trucks come and leave in for warranty repair all day...it happens, no big deal.

The 2001 GMC Sierra I had as a 17 y/o was a great truck. It had lots of little issues though to; the 4WD fuse kept tripping, the driver side wheel bearing went out twice in 20K, the starter went, and the engine would idle extremely rough in cold weather. I got the truck with 40K km's on it so most of the work was warranty and I couldn't really complain. That being said my brother bought it and the engine lost two pistons at 100,000 km's. Still drove home somehow two cylinders down. He threw a used engine in it but ditched it for Ford's version of Cash for Clunkers soon after due to transmission issues.

I've had some personal issues with our local GM dealer and we've had some problems with them as a business. I can't say I think much of the Silverado but there HD trucks are nicely equipped. We've had a few customers that complain the transmission electronics can be finicky requiring service but other than that there Diesels seem to hold up well.

Yeah that 3800 takes a beating. We have a customer, an older guy that travels for a living that has 380,000 on one. I've seen several examples of high mileage V6 Buicks starting with 1980's model Regals that had the 3.8 V6. This is coming from a Chevy hater. I've seen a couple low mileage late 1990's model for sale that I almost bought for a commuter, beat around car. They ride good too.

The American truck buyer prefers good throttle response. 200 hp may be adequate in a Transit Connect; it is not enough in a full-size pickup that starts at 5000 lb.

It's not in the Transit Connect, it's in the Full Size Transit, and yes they're branding it as a Power Stroke. 185 HP and 350 lb-ft

But a lot of that "good throttle response" that Americans love is actually torque, which the diesel has in spades.

I saw two canyons on us 78 today in stone mountain... THEY ARE HIDEOUS!!!! small tires for a truck, the body looked like a toy rc car, they were in the left lane behind after I passed, I think we have no threat.

Maybe I'll get to rent one someday since GM is a rental fleet whore.

That is effectively what the truck is. ;) Downsized Silverado with Equinox engine. Each vehicle outsells the Taco by a large margin, so...

Doesn't quite work that way. Any engine can be gear down to put enough torque to the pavement. Power (i.e. amount of torque within a given period of time) is what gives good acceleration off the line.

Let's just see what happens. Most of the diesels on the market have poor HP numbers. Even the Ram Ecodiesel is only putting out 240 HP...

Don't you think it'd be a tactical move to bring out an ecologically friendly version of the F150 that could clear 30 mpg? The F150 is now lighter than ever, with a well geared tranny it won't be fast but it won't be 1992 Sunfire slow either. They have there Ecoboost line for power, they can easily have a diesel line for efficiency.

Agree or disagree, I'm hearing it's on the table for Ford.
