My ideal truck would be a 7/8-size 2nd gen Taco regular cab short bed with the GX460 powertrain... I don't represent the majority of Taco buyers. :D

I don't think it's a bad render....I kinda like it actually. Tone down the chrome in front and pick a solid exterior color and I bet it would be nice looking.

Jalopnik's render is "bad" because it's inaccurate. Headlight positioning doesn't match the teaser shot GM released earlier:

Note the headlight height is the same between the Colorado and Canyon, probably done so GM can use common fender stampings, while the hood will be unique due to the grille shape.

To be honest it depends on what Fuel mileage these thugs are getting. If they are close to the 30 city i might have to check it out. Grant it not the first year they come out but at least test drive one. I drive about 600 miles a week and the Tacoma Fuel mileage sucks

8.9L/100km or 26 US mpg combined. Keep in mind this is per Australian standard. EPA test method with low-temperature cold starts and air conditioning use will probably lower that figure.

I am pretty sure my civic has moar ground clearance then that in the front :p

But I am not a fan of their one and a half cabs. Regardless, I like the Chevy more.

One notable difference: the Canyon will have an available AutoTrac transfer case with a lockable center diff, so dry-pavement 4WD will be possible. The driver can set the 4WD selector knob to "auto" and the system will engage/disengage the front driveline depending on rear wheel slippage.

The cabs appear to be stolen from the Tacoma, the front end looks too big for the rest of the truck, and the square wheel wells will make it difficult to fit oversize tires. The air dam looks like it came off a cheap ricer body kit and the headlights look like a Furby's eyes. Even if a divine miracle happens and it turns out to be the superior mid size truck, the Colorado/Canyon looks so annoying I would be bummed to see it in my driveway instead of a Tacoma.

I corrected my original post. I was under the impression the Canyon transfer case will have a differential built-in, like the GX460 and certain trim levels of the 4R and FJ. However, reading up more on Autotrac, it is not as sophisticated:

There's an "auto" setting on the 4WD selector knob. In that mode, the ADD is always engaged (so front driveshaft spins). The system will automatically switch between 2H and 4H at the transfer case depending on rear wheel slippage. There's probably some clutch system that gives the system a faster response time than what we see in Tacos when manually selecting 4H.

Here's a picture of the switch on a Sierra. It's between the headlight knob and trailer brake controller:
