Please take my reply as just that, not arguing or trying to make excuses. Some of it can also depend on where you live, as far as service. My local Toyota dealer out here has been fairly hit and miss.
Also, was 2008 the first year of a new body style? I can't remember if it was 08 or 07, but one thing to always watch out for is buying the first new year model.. They always have problems.
As for replacing the wrong door lock... seriously? That's ridiculous. Sorry you had so much trouble.
Thank goodness Tacoma's are so easy to maintain.

JRG: Betcha didn't think this would turn in to a GM bash-fest with you as the defender of the faithful! :crapstorm:

I wonder how long GM will stay in the mid size truck market.

The thing is, and I have argued this before, EVERY manufacturer has its bad apples. For every GM hater who loves their Toyota, I can show you a Toyota hater who loves his GM. Same for EVERY brand out there. I have met Toyota owners, Ford, GM, Dodge, etc.... ALL who have owned their trucks for "X" years, and XXX,XXX miles, and not had a lick of trouble, but the other brands that they have owned were junk as far as they were concerned.

Lots of people here like the Ford F150. Personally I think they are an ugly hulk of steel, and that is my opinion (and just that, an opinion). My brother-in-law owns one, and we have NOTHING but trouble out of it. But I bet one of you owns an F150 and haven't had a LICK of trouble out of it. It is simple, EVERYONE has different likes and dislikes. Everyone has their own opinion on each car line. Obviously there are some people who haven't had any trouble with their GM vehicles, or they wouldn't keep buying them. Just because YOU (and I mean this in general, not towards a specific member) think they are ugly/garbage/worthless/cheap/whatever word you want to use, does not mean that everyone else in the world holds that same opinion.

I worked for GM for over 20 years, and all I heard day in and day out were about customers that owned a *insert brand name here* and it was nothing but garbage, and their GM was perfect. And you will find that same belief at every OTHER service department. I will tell you this much: In my shop I get an EQUAL number of brands come in with complaints and problems. No one brand more than another really. Again, it is called MASS PRODUCTION and this means that flaws are part of what happens. There is no way to avoid it.

On the specific topic on hand here, I welcome the new Colorado to see what GM comes up with. One reason is because change breeds change. If nobody changed anything then we would have the same truck for 10 years and people would be crying for change....oh wait. We have that already here with the Tacoma. People are crying out for a change. 10 years is WAY too long for ANY body style to go without a change. Off the top of my head I can't think of ANY truck or car that went so long without a significant change in it other than the Tacoma. And face it, since 2005 there really hasn't been any significant design changes. Just new tech being added. I LOVE my Toyota, but that doesn't mean that I think Toyota doesn't need to do SOMETHING or it will lose out. People get bored of the same thing over and over, and when they want change from something that they love, if they don't get it, they will look elsewhere.

I just want to second everything that you said, part of which is also what I said. But you're totally right every group has bad apples and every group has loyal defenders.

I had a Nissan go 181k and sold it running great, no drips, no leaks. So in my experience they are just as reliable.

As to the OP, I think Toyota will do just fine. Competition is good. If Chevy and Nissan put a diesel in their trucks, maybe we can finally get a damn hilux here... or at least a Tacoma with that diesel in it.

While the 1st gen DID last 9 years, they had several major changes along the way.

The S10/S15 went from 1982 to 2004 without significant changes, other than a 1994 refresh. Ask me about my best friend's 1989 S10 and how he wanted to set it on fire... yet he went and got 1990 and 1998 Astro vans. He loved the 1990, he also wants to torch his 1998 due to rampant quality issues. (to be fair, the van is old. The truck was not)

My company used to give out GM products (specifically, Pontiac Grand Ams and later Chevy Malibus after the death of Pontiac) until 2011 when we switched to Nissan Altimas. Corporate Procurement said the switch saved our company tens of thousands of dollars in repair and down time costs. Those cars were 2011 models but looked ten years old!

I agree that this isn't a thread about hating GM - it's just personal experience that taints me against GM. Once again, that being said, competition is good! I do want to see the Taco updated in a couple of years, I'll probably get a new one. (Unless the Euro Ranger makes it here, then I am out... back to Ford! :) :) )

And YES, coming from a first and foremost a Ford guy... the new Colorado is one hell of a good looking truck. :p

I doubt the Tacoma will lose much of the market. I think the largest buyer of the colorado/canyon will be domestic full size guys that don't need a full size.

I will drive one for sure but can't look past GM's track record.

As for the frontier, my brother in law Lemon-law'd his old Xterra and had nothing but problems with it for 3 years. For this reason I won't be looking at the new Fronty.

I'm still waiting for a real Tacoma Limited with proper Limited ammenities like a digital 2 zone climate control, heated and cooled seats real leather seats, power seats, power foldin mirrors with heat, height adjustable seats, a sunroof and an upscale feeling interior.

The Tacoma Limited package just misses some key items and replaces them with lame chrome accents.
