The Colorado might take back Chevy owners who went to Toyota while they didn't have a midsize offering. The Tacoma is outdated but its a formula that is working for Toyota, Gm ran the s10 for a long time as well without any major upgrades. I owned an 05 Colorado before my 2012 Tacoma i have now and it had its issues but so does my Tacoma, they are not problem free. Almost all manufactures have some kind of issues with there vehicles. The colorado drivetrain was smooth and didnt vibrate and the engine didn't ping like my taco but it did need new axle seals at 50k and the ECM died at 80k leaving me stranded and that's when i traded it in. The taco may last longer as some have said on here but its not going to get there issue free, and neither will the Colorado.

I will admit that I was drooling over the Colorado when it was first announced. So why did I buy a Tacoma? The Colorado is coming out with that tired ass 3.5L V6. I had the same engine in a 1998 Blazer and at best the acceleration is "leisurely". I tow a 3500 lb pontoon boat, after driving that Blazer I couldn't imagine pulling the boat up our hill. So I looked around for another truck. My wife hasn't had any problems with her Prius (over 150K miles) so I looked at Tacoma, and now I have one.

Now if Chevy were to have put that 4.3L V6 in the Colorado, then the Tacoma might have some competition.

Ya toyota has a lot to worry about Nissan and gmc, what about 2016 Colorado or cannon being diesel option. I think in the next couple of years there's going to be a few mid size diesels in the works and mabe ford will introduce a 2 liter eco all aluminum ranger in years to come to compete with GM. Tacoma hasn't changed the motor or transmission in 10 years. Mabe toyota is just going to say screw a redesign and just keep on selling the tacoma with gold rims and push bar and call it the Baja 1000 for 2016. Theres still loyal customers to toyota that will still buy it but for how long before they make the switch to another brand.

    It's a direct injection 3.6L, not the old 3.5.

    In a word, yes.

The Tacoma is the best truck in the mid-size segment. However, it does lack features. Toyota has something up their sleeves for the 2016 (or whenever it is) redesign. You can expect new engines and transmissions. More features and I'd dare to bet it will be more "car-like" too.

But we won't know any of that until early or mid-2015. Toyota has always kept their new products under wraps fairly well.

I do think that the taco will survive but not in its present state. it will be interesting to see how toyota reacts to the new direction the small truck market is going.

I do think the tacoma needs a sub model with more power straight from the factory. Yes, you can buy a supercharger from toyota, but I think there should be a model or option with more power.

I welcome driving a truck that has been around for 10 years, this way I know most of the bugs have been worked out. As far as the engine, I love the Tacoma V6. It will run forever and it time proven, what more can a consumer ask for.

As far as the GM VS. Toyota thing, my wife drives a GMC Acadia. It is a 2011, paid for but I am getting sick of driving to the dealer for recalls. We have had more little problems and a couple of big problems with it, I just want it to last a few more years. Her next vehicle will be another Toyota, a 4 runner this time like we had in the past or maybe a Lexus SUV.

We are a Toyota/Lexus family for life now I think.

Larry,,,, the 3.6 in the Colorado isn't the 4.3l that came in your 98' Blazer. Not even close. Just like the new 4.3l isn't anything like the old 4.3l in your Blazer either. The current 3.6l is used in a bunch of crap like Camaro's, Caddy CTS & ATS, and I think some GM crossovers.

    Just saying.

BTW, my 2000' S-10 4.3l reg cab, short bed, auto was trouble free for the 75K miles I put on it.

I think you read me backwards... the 98 Blazer had the 3.5L and was anemic. This is (basically) the same engine going into the 2015 Colorado, and will, I'm sure, be equally anemic.

They would have had me if they put the new 4.3L in, then the Colorado would have enough torque to pull my boat up the hill.

Nissan and Chevy has been trying to get a slice of pie for a long time. Minor fluctuation is all. Like the article says:

I thought I'd heard that Chevy was hesitant to get back in as they thought it would pull too many customers off of Silverados.

And doesn't this just show that the auto execs just don't get it? Not everybody wants or needs a full size truck. Ya, some people will buy the mid size instead of the full size for a myriad of reasons... so full size sales goes down, but I think the mid size will attract more people than they lose. ...well, assuming the mid size isn't horrible.

After reading through all this I think the CEO's of Toyota really need to join Tacoma world so we get want we, the Tacoma owners, want!

If Chevy put a smaller diesel that got decent mpg and had good torque in their Colorado, I'd buy that and sell my taco in a heart beat. I LOVE diesel motors, just not how big the 2500's or f350's and such are.

That is exactly what their doing. Their torque specs are awesome for their diesel. I'm excited to see how they perform.

Toyota is behind the entire auto industry across the board, it's sad but true.

If anything it's time for them to play the game of catchup and not rely on technology that's almost 10 years old in the Tacoma (the drivetrain). The most powerful 6 cylinder they made was first created 21 years ago. (2JZ)

Look at all the manufacturers with highly efficient turbo engines. But no turbo or diesel in a single model sold here.

Not that it really matters to me though since I'll still be driving an 18 year old truck.
