Tacomas are like cockroaches. They'll survive anything.

I am a bit. All this bs. Pooh will this be the end of tacoma? Is the frontier better? Will chevy with their shitty water pumps prevail?!

Go buy one. Let me know how long it takes for the buttons to fall off the radio.

Sounds about right. I'm probably in the minority but I don't want a car that's smarter than me. I don't need a car to alert me that there's someone in my blind spot or apply my breaks for me. All this technology is getting ridiculous.

Totally agree. I miss the old cars that were just mechanically sound and would run right. They didn't need a billion computers telling them what to do and everything.
And spoonman, this thread was started just to get peoples ideas and thoughts about how Toyota might respond to some better competition. No need to get angry. Appreciate your input

I do wonder if it is because they drifted away from a world platform and have two different trucks. The HiLux for the world market and the Tacoma for North America. (Well, Mexico gets both but I digress).

Then again, the basic platform for the previous gen trucks stayed the same for almost 10 years. The underpinnings of the 85-95 trucks was almost identical. Yes, there were some revisions, IFS for the US market 86+ 4x4s and a rebody in 89, but the platform remained pretty static.

Same deal with the first gen Tacoma. 95-04 was essentially unchanged, some cosmetic upgrades and tweaks but that is about it.

So we are now about 10 years into the 2nd gen Tacoma. Same deal, 05-14 pretty much unchanged other then minor sheet metal and interior revisions. IMO, that means a clean slate redesign is forthcoming.

Toyota seems to have figured out that the 10 year lifecycle is the sweet spot in amortizing the costs of design, tooling, govt certification, manufacturing setup, etc and keeping sales numbers strong.

All their cars are just as reliable as Toyota. I know many Toyotas that have been POS as well. Like two 07 Camrys we use to own that were both bought back by Toyota due to Transmission failures within 500 miles.

    But we own both Nissan and Toyota. I have a 2000 Camry with 218k, a 2008 Corolla. 101k, and a 13 Altima with 7k.

Hard bodies you'll see but that was the last time they really made quality long lasting trucks.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I'd still be driving this if that cute girl that pulled me over hadn't insisted she had to buy my truck.

Except frame rust in nearly new trucks, weak rear springs, reduced payload from specs, transmission issues and now melting DTRL's. Tacoma's are great, but they are far from perfect. Adding stupid stuff like additional electronics moves them further from being a truck and increases repair costs and long term reliability. Nissan makes very durable and capable vehicles, but they are as plush as a Tacoma. I really hope the Colorado does well because it will get Toyota off it's butt and improve the Tacoma by some other measure than just adding technology and fake beadlock wheels.

The 2015 Colorado looks like it will be a nice truck. That said, I opted to buy a 2014 Tacoma rather than wait to consider the Colorado later this year. What I'd really like to see is Ford get back in the mid-size truck market and offer something with their 2.0L or 2.7L EcoBoost engine.

Haven't read all the threads.... but....I'm personally waiting for the tacoma redesign.

I'll be completely honest.... When I'm ready to buy, I won't hesitate to shop around. I don't like the look of the new Colorado. The GM Canyon isn't bad looking. The Nissan Navara looks too much like an SUV in the front end. Looks girly.... (and no, I don't want a girly looking truck). LOL
Did anyone notice the Navara only come in 4cylinder? (I'm not interested in Turbo diesel.). http://www.leftlanenews.com/nissan-frontier-2015.html
I'd have to check out the specs.....What can it tow/haul. What type of amenities does it have?

I bought my tacoma 7 years ago and wanted it LOADED without leather. The truck didn't even have power seats...Really Toyota?

The GM is probably the only thing I'd consider in terms of 'looks'. It would have to blow me away in terms of amenities, impressive towing/hauling, cargo, bla bla bla....and be priced too good to resist before I would give up my Toyota reliability and loyalty.

Now 'Cmon Toyota - get on with the redesign!

I like the look of the old Frontier regular cabs. A guy around here drives one. I don't much care for their newer models. They look especially ugly when they have a roof rack.

Actually I was referring to the ops question of whether the tacoma will survive because of chevy or nissan. But in all seriousness, in the catastrophic event of a nuclear holocaust, the only thing to survive would be cockroaches and tacomas.

1998 Blazer only had one engine option, the 4.3L. There was no 3.5L option

Toyota won't luxurize the Tacoma because they really want you to pony up for a 4runner instead, if you want luxury. At that price point, you can get a trailer to haul things a truck bed would be used for.

    Howdy,
my thoughts are that Toyota has a fairly simple working platform. My EXwife had a 98 tacoma four cylinder which she used for a auto parts delivery vehicle. When she got rid of it it had 330,000 miles on the odometer. It still drove like a new truck. Through those miles she had to replace the brakes about every 6 months and the a/c compressor one time. Never used a quart of oil and still looked new. This was all stop and go use. I think the Toyota platform is still good if used like a truck and maintained. Have a goodun!!
